Robertson County First Bale Brings 40C Per Pound
Robertson County’s 1963 first bale sold Saturday morning at the P and M Bank corner. Grower Frank Sam Loria earned 40 cents per pound with the 503 pound bale. J B Young of Young Cotton Company bought the bale, tied to Brazos Valley Cotton Company of Brenham, beating Pete Scamardo in a coin toss. A $283.40 premium supported by local businesses plus free 50 acre spraying will honor Loria, who has farmed 290 acres in Brazos Bottoms since 1949. The bale’s corrected weight reflects 503 pounds after deducting dolly weight. last year 608 pounds was mis-stated. The event drew a small crowd including Miss Diane Hoyt and Chamber President Marlin Jentsch. Robertson County ginners processed around 30,000 bales last year, with 1963 expected to match that total.
