Hearne events mark Legion drive golf and music week
More than 300 legionaires, businessmen and city officials packed an American Legion barbecue as Miles Scriviner Post kicked off a $10,000 building fund drive. A July 4 celebration was planned. Lieutenant Willie F. Sander received the Air Medal with Gold Star. Hearne golfers dominated a Sunday tournament with 175 participants, awards going to Mrs. Lawrence Brady and R. E. Farquhar in scotch foursomes. men’s winners were R. M. Goodwin and W. C. Wiese Jr. Separate driving contest winners were Mrs. T. P. Culbreth and Bill Shaw. National Music Week activities included joint concerts by Calvert and Hearne High School bands with a Hearne concert Monday and Calvert Tuesday. Rev. C. W. Sanders began serving Hearne Baptist Church, succeeding Rev. O. G. Barrow, who moved to Austin to pastor Rosedale. Sanders arrived with his wife and three-year-old daughter Sal.

George Steele of Hearne was elected state officer candidate for president at a Tuesday District I Area II Future Farmers meeting and won the public speaking contest. Hearne Eagles, with Marc Nigliazzo pitching, beat A&M Consolidated 6-3 to lead the District 19-AA baseball race. Mullinnix Sheet Metal Works planned a move to a South Highway 6 location. Hearne Chamber of Commerce backed a stance supporting any Navasota River dam site that is economically feasible as decided by the Corps of Engineers.

L Klotz Service Held In Bremond
Funeral services for Louis Klotz age 68 of Bremond were held Wednesday at St Marys Catholic Church with Rev Louis Wozniak officiating. Burial followed at St Marys Cemetery. He died April 19 at his Bremond home. Born August 11 1902 in Bremond he was a retired farmer and a member of St Marys Catholic Church. Survivors include two sisters Verna Wigiert and Janie Stromenski and four brothers Steve Frank Albert and Pete Klotz.
