Hearne events mark Legion drive golf and music week

More than 300 legionaires, businessmen and city officials packed an American Legion barbecue as Miles Scriviner Post kicked off a $10,000 building fund drive. A July 4 celebration was planned. Lieutenant Willie F. Sander received the Air Medal with Gold Star. Hearne golfers dominated a Sunday tournament with 175 participants, awards going to Mrs. Lawrence Brady and R. E. Farquhar in scotch foursomes. men’s winners were R. M. Goodwin and W. C. Wiese Jr. Separate driving contest winners were Mrs. T. P. Culbreth and Bill Shaw. National Music Week activities included joint concerts by Calvert and Hearne High School bands with a Hearne concert Monday and Calvert Tuesday. Rev. C. W. Sanders began serving Hearne Baptist Church, succeeding Rev. O. G. Barrow, who moved to Austin to pastor Rosedale. Sanders arrived with his wife and three-year-old daughter Sal.

Hearne figures in 1961 district actions and sports

George Steele of Hearne was elected state officer candidate for president at a Tuesday District I Area II Future Farmers meeting and won the public speaking contest. Hearne Eagles, with Marc Nigliazzo pitching, beat A&M Consolidated 6-3 to lead the District 19-AA baseball race. Mullinnix Sheet Metal Works planned a move to a South Highway 6 location. Hearne Chamber of Commerce backed a stance supporting any Navasota River dam site that is economically feasible as decided by the Corps of Engineers.

Europe’s oldest bed unearthed on Thera in ancient town

Archaeologists excavating a Greek town on Thera in the Aegean have uncovered the oldest wooden bed, five feet long and preserved in form though the leather padding has crumbled. The find contrasts ancient comfort seeking with modern king size beds.

L Klotz Service Held In Bremond

Funeral services for Louis Klotz age 68 of Bremond were held Wednesday at St Marys Catholic Church with Rev Louis Wozniak officiating. Burial followed at St Marys Cemetery. He died April 19 at his Bremond home. Born August 11 1902 in Bremond he was a retired farmer and a member of St Marys Catholic Church. Survivors include two sisters Verna Wigiert and Janie Stromenski and four brothers Steve Frank Albert and Pete Klotz.

Wheelock 4-H elects officers in split meetings

Wheelock 4-H Club met April 14 for its regular program and divided into senior and junior groups. Seniors elected Beckie Byer as president and other officers. juniors chose Keith Byer as president and Wade Hedrick as VP. County Agent Harry Smith announced a candy sale drive and members were urged to contact a member to purchase. Mrs. L E Weber vacationed in Capitan, New Mexico with her daughter and family.

Miss Donna Hoyt visited Austin from Monday to Wednesday of last week, staying at a local residence and meeting friends during her brief midweek trip.

Family Guests Gather in Hearne for Weeklong Visit

Mr. and Mrs. Archer Hoyt and daughter Amy hosted a gathering that included his brother and family. Guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Lanham and their children Angela, Leslie, and Wendy came from North Bergen New Jersey to spend time with relatives. The Keeneys Dennis and wife from New Jersey joined as dinner guests with Mr. and Mrs. E A Copeland during the Keeneys stay.
