42 Refrigerator Cars Derail Near Gau Sunday

Forty two refrigerated freight cars derailed Sunday at 3 50 a m half a mile west of Gau near St Louis bound from the valley to St Louis Mo No injuries reported no damage estimate yet Missouri Pacific will take three days to clear traffic rerouted through Houston cars stacked two to four high onions carrots lettuce and tomatoes spilled from several cars highway patrolman calls it a big wreck wheel of first car believed to have broken loose causing the derailment

Beauty Salon Opens in Hearne on April 13

Mrs. Wilma Varner will open Texas Beauty Salon to the public on Tuesday April 13. She previously lived in Hearne and operated a beauty shop before leaving in 1958. The salon at 104 Fourth Street will award prizes on opening day and Varner has judged hat styling at South Texas beauty shows.

Easter Cantata by Baptist Sanctuary Choir

The Sanctuary Choir of the First Baptist Church presents Canticles of Easter at 7 p m Sunday night April 11 directed by David S Doty. The four part program follows Go To Dark Gethsemane through Calvary to the resurrection with narration by Rev Janes E Schratt and features solos duets ensembles and choir selections from Blanche Brock and J S Bach. An invitation is extended to the public.

Escoubas Elected Hearne Mayor In 576 To 338 Margin

John Escoubas won the Hearne mayoralty with 576 votes to 338 for incumbent Jack Ramsay, in a high turnout race. Incumbents Dr Joe Gallagher and Guy Chandler topped council races, Grady Griffin Fred Ferrara and Dr B K Doherty won council seats, while Bill Paimos was unopposed for city attorney with 802 votes.

Maundy Thursday Service By Robertson County Rite

The Robertson County Scottish Rite Association observes its annual Maundy Thursday with a special service on Thursday evening April 15. The program begins at 8 p.m. in Golden Rule Masonic Hall. All members of Scottish Rite bodies are invited to attend.

Wilson Roberts Elected School Board Members

Joe D. Wilson and Albert D. Roberts were elected to the Hearne School Board in the April 3 election at the Fire Station. Wilson led with 301 votes, Roberts had 212, while John C. Reisttino received 160. The board will canvass the votes at the next meeting and install the new members if valid.

Calvert Woman's Club Sponsors Easter Parade

The Calvert Woman's Club announces an Easter Parade on Monday night April 12 at 7 00 in the high school auditorium. Youth from babies to fourth grade will march in Easter clothes. Contact coordinators by Saturday if participating. A small admission will be charged.

Legion Sponsors Teen-Age Night at Legion Hall

The local American Legion post and its auxiliary sponsor a teen-age night at the Legion Hall on Friday night, April 9. Eighth through 12th graders may dance or listen to music from a newly installed juke box. Students should bring money for the juke box and soft drinks. parents are urged to attend and join the enjoyment.

Golf Tourney Is a Success With 186 Players Registered

The 12th Annual Hearne Golf Association Tournament on Sunday April 4 drew 186 golfers to the blind bogey format on a par 74 course. John Fred Moss claimed medalist with a 72 and won a golf ball shagger. Winners and runners up across five flights included Tony Scalone, Jesse Gistinger, J Wehn Jr, Dan Proctor, John Schaer, Charles Sanders, Joe Rasco, James Pledger and John Hicks. The food committee served over 5000 barbecue dinners.

Grand Champion Steer Brings 76 Cents A Pound At Hearne Show

Jerry Elliott's 830 pound Hereford won the Hearne Future Farmers Show and sold for 76 cents a pound to Raymond Theiss of Planters and Merchants State Bank, which donated it to the chapter before sale to Country Foods. Eddie Mathews' heavyweight steer sold for 50 cents a pound to Brady's Shepworth Super Market, with multiple buyers at the auction including First State Bank, Robin Amos, Smith's Grocery, Producer's Coop., and others. A group purchased a calf for a Chamber of Commerce barbecue, and further donations supported the chapter's prizes along with a $100 gift from Cliff Wiese Jr. for winner purses.
