Fashion notes highlight fur collared wraps and capes as the season’s bold choice. Cocoa and gray squirrel furs lead trims, fringe deep and lavish, with navy veldyne wraps and capes in multiple colors including yellow, heather blue, violet, willow green. Designers showcase tailored and plaid reverses, yarn embroidery, and white serge capes with striking fringe for varied ages and occasions.
Rupert Hughes to write the history of the Robert Stowe Gill post of the American Legion in New York. The post consists mainly of Lamb’s Club writers and actors. Hughes notes his own Army service from 1897, roles in the Mexican border, and adjutant general duty in New York during troop raisings.
M W Grimes of Le Sueur Minnesota earns a place on the Minnesota American Legion honor roll for self appointed correspondence during the war. He wrote 8286 personal letters to 230 men and seven women from Le Sueur and sent weekly hometown papers. He aided post formation and dedicated a full edition to fallen veterans.
Washington reports strong veteran presence in Congress with 81 former World War I servicemen already in the House and two in the Senate. Earl Vance, a former stenographer now running an airplane company in Miles City Montana, logged 1000 accident free flight hours and drew praise from Lenmel Balles of the American Legion. After the war he toured Montana, briefly considered Texas, then returned to land and continued aviation work serving doctors and horse doctors across Montana. He attends state conventions by air.
Raymond O Brackett ran a Marblehead hotel and valued service he extended to guests with oyster-rich orders. He joined the navy at war outbreak, served as a lieutenant aboard the Lake View, mined the North Sea and witnessed Scapa Flow’s fleet sinking. Returning home he kept his sign and learned of his election as national vice commander of the American Legion.
In Tampa Florida a man named Rooman was seen wiping his automobile with a large American flag as a dust cloth. A representative from the local American Legion post formed a committee and concluded the offender was simply ignorant and directed him to stop using the flag for cleaning.
The American Legion activity is described with items from Buenos Aires to Quincy Massachusetts. War dead squares in Quincy honor 22 fallen service members while plans are discussed for 1000 British and 1000 American soldiers to visit the Italian front next summer. In Colone North Dakota the motto Start them right leads Legion youth troop instruction. Prisoners in Los Angeles County Jail allegedly borrow Legion buttons to gain sympathy in court as the judge is deemed wise.
A USDA analysis notes Louisiana leads in strawberry production growth, with 1921 setting a peak of 1400 carloads marketed in U S and Canada and Chicago commanding top prices. The Hammond field station informs growers daily on prices, shipments, and weather to sustain expansion and plan the 2022 season.
The U S Department of Agriculture says durability depends on heartwood versus sapwood. Split posts last as long as round ones if heartwood content is equal. more sapwood lowers durability, more heartwood increases it. Spruce, hemlock, and true firs differ. creosote treatment favors round posts, and heart faces of split posts often resist preservative penetration.
The claim that too much manure will burn up the crop is only partly true. It may if very dry season and manure not worked into soil. There is little likelihood of injury from heavy application if done right. More corn has been lost through hoeing than through too much manure.
