Hearne Golf Tournament Opens At Daybreak Sunday

Early arrivals tee off at daybreak Sunday for the 11th Hearne Golf Tournament at the municipal course. Over 200 out of town golfers plus locals expected in the one day blind bogey event with more than $800 in awards across five flights. A pitching and driving contest also offers prizes. Tournament begins at daybreak with no tee offs after 1 p.m. Saturday rounds possible. an alternate course may reopen Sunday to ease traffic. Free barbecue for players and public noted. event described as one of Texas’ largest one day meets drawing many top golfers.

Red Cross Funds Over $500 Here

Red Cross collections in Hearne exceed 500 dollars to date, per drive chairman T H Stotts. Workers are urged to finish solicitations and turn in all funds. An outstanding collection came from Blackshear Schools and churches led by B C Murray, with contributions totaling 154.01. Other details note past champions in golf and a renewed turnout for the weekend program at the greens and course prepared for play.

ONeal Wins Weems Cup at 8th Rockdale Relays

Hearne Eagles win the 8th Rockdale Relays by 31 points led by Steve ONeal with 34 points earning the T A Weems Trophy as the meet’s top performer. Hearne set a new 440 yard record 50.3 by Jack White, with Hearne taking multiple events and scoring in five key races among 39 schools and 250 athletes.

Guy E Chandler was named chairman of the 1964 Texas A M Development Fund Drive for Hearne by the Executive Board of the Association of Former Students. A graduate of A M class of 49 he is an active member and leader among former students. The fund supports school programs of Excellence not funded by the state.

City Accepting Orders For New Mercury Lights

The city’s mercury vapor street light program invites neighborhoods to join. Residents fund purchase while the city installs and maintains the lights at no charge. City Manager N. L. Hearne Group Attends Highway Confab in Jacksonville

Roy Henry H McCullam and Gervase Reagan, three Hearne Chamber of Commerce representatives, attended a meeting of the Alamo Highway Association in Jacksonville Texas last Thursday. The main topic was improvements and advertising of Highway 79 to boost tourist traffic and promote use of the route to Mexico City for the World Olympics.

FFA Project Show Set for Saturday in Hearne

Hearne FFA hosts its 20th annual project show Saturday with registrations at 8 a.m. judging in four departments begins at 9 a.m. and showmanship contest at 11 a.m. Grand Champion chosen at 4:30 p.m. A public auction proceeds at 2 p.m. in downtown Hearne. Judges include Bill Holtzapple and Bill Shaw. Five beef classes, three poultry, seven swine, two shop. prizes include 25 dollars for Grand Champion and first showmanship, 15 for reserve, 10 for first in division. The event is co sponsored by Hearne Young Farmers and Hearne Chamber of Commerce.

Roberts Named Manager For Brady's Shopworth

Albert D. Roberts has become manager of Brady's Shopworth Super Market, a Hearne store owned by Alfred B. Brady. A former teacher and school administrator with degrees from the University of Texas and Sam Houston State College, he is married to Genevieve Brady with two children. They plan to reside at 102 Crestway.
