Local Man's Escape Fails
Louis Midkiff a two year old Hay ward burglar and Alameda county jail escapes was returned to Terre Haute Indiana federal penitentiary after an unsuccessful break yesterday. Midkiff and Clifford Hammer twenty two of San Francisco had their brief period of freedom ended within twenty four hours after escaping the penitentiary by swimming the Wabash river. Hunter near Terre Haute captured the fugitive and Mark Conklin of West Terre Haute turned him over to a searching posse. Midkiff captured northwest of Marshall Illinois eighteen miles west of Terre Haute by Louis Carsons Clark county deputy sheriff. Both men were serving ten year terms for taking a stolen vehicle and transporting firearms at the time of escape. Midkiff had burglary charges in Hayward and escaped from Alameda county jail last July prior to federal arrest.
