Hayward District Community Chest seeks $1850 more to reach the $8160 minimum for welfare agencies. With $6300 in cash and pledges, campaign chairman E. W. Burr urges one final effort to canvass untouched areas. The drive aims to end by Armistice Day as Chest workers plan to start distributing funds then.
The Hayward Merchants baseball team meets Pleasanton in the Southern Alameda County league at Bret Harte school grounds Sunday at 2 36 pm. Pleasanton leads the standings with two wins and no losses, making the matchup a top contest of the season. Ferreira or Brasil will start on the mound for Hayward, with 41 Swope in the batting lineup.
The Hayward Garden Club invites the public to an open demonstration at the California School Monday at 2 pm. Miss J Walrond Skinner will lead visitors through the school garden, explaining planting and care suited to Hayward climate. Also note the Quist family illness and recent return from vacation.
The Chest drive chairman releases a second donor list with many contributors and gift amounts ranging from $1 to $156. The roster includes Bank of Italy, Hayward Clinic, Trinity Church Auxiliary, Catholic Danghi America, Veterans Luncheon Club, and numerous individuals and local firms. The compiled donations reflect broad community support for the Chest campaign.
Alameda and San Francisco fortures join Oakland veterans for joint installation at the Veterans' Memorial Building. Archie Kesterson will become chef de gare and Senator S A Christian cheminet, with R Snapper Ingram as chef de chemin de fer and Roy Moulton as installing officer. Alameda officers Harry Nelson and Major E R Her will also be installed. Kesterton was elected to the top post without opposition.
The John Muir grammar school soccer team leads the league with two wins and one tie and faces Markham next Monday in a pivotal match. If Markham wins Bret Harte B could challenge Muir in a two to three game playoff set for Thursday Friday and Sunday. Bret Harte B recently beat Bret Harte A 7 to 6 while Muir holds the top spot.
An all turkey prize whist party will be held at the Fairview school house hosted by the Fairview club next Friday evening with autos available from the Green Shutter hotel at o clock. The Hayward Juniors have no Sunday league game in the East Bay, so soccer fans must seek other entertainment.
Helen Logan eight year old daughter of Calvin A. Logan of Garden Avenue sustained a fracture of the left leg after stepping into a street and being struck by a car driven by Mrs. Gertrude Barton near Hayward. Barton was not found at fault and the girl was taken to Hayward Central Hospital for treatment.
Mrs Harold Otto attended a Friday shower and bridge lunch hosted by Mrs George S Roberts in Castro Valley. Scores were won by Mrs PAL falle, Mrs Carrie Jensen and Miss Florence Poole with a pink and blue table theme. Additional notices include family arrivals in Salinas, a Castro Valley Parent Teachers association bridge party, a Beverly Priest birthday celebration, a Halloween masquerade planned in Pinedale court, and upcoming Hayward wedding plans for Bernice Slater and Howard Burgess.
Officers from 155 Sunday schools met at First Baptist Oakland to report advances in their programs. Dr George Dewey spoke on The Great Work of the Teacher as 600 teachers gathered for the crusade update. The revival spirit grows with more churches joining and better results expected.
More than 200 attended a birth day anniversary party for Mrs. Anna Vogt and Mrs. Doris Stewart hosted by Mrs. Stewart at the Poinsetta Camp Royal Neighbors of America. The event followed a business meeting with games, dancing, and Halloween-themed decor, with performances by Vernon Gabe] and Miriam Vogt.
San Francisco educator P. W. McGlade will speak at the high school Monday evening for the Parent-Teachers Association gathering. All parents with children in the school are invited. Mrs. Chris Blake will preside.
At Mrs. Stacey Sutton’s home the PEO Sisterhood hosted its annual Guest Day with Chapter FG members from Oakland and Berkeley attending. Mrs. C O Girard reported on the Supreme Convention. piano solo by Mrs. Helen Le Gras delighted guests. refreshments were served by Mrs. Perry and Mrs. Deane.
Mrs. P M. Pendergast will preside at the annual Hallowe en party at Luther Burbank school presented by the farm home department of the Farm bureau Saturday evening. Dancing, cards and Hallowe en fun are on the program with a special children's room. Bay View center members supervise games. Farm centers assist during the evening. Open to department members and friends.
Germano Silva a pioneer of Hayward Highlands and former landowner returned home from Morton hospital in San Francisco where he had been seriously ill and is reported to be improving. Miss Grace Godkin of San Francisco is visiting Mrs C EB Godkin.
In a fast paced Burbank school game Company F beats the Marchant Calculators 26 to 16. Forth captained the team with six goals and two free throws while Zizzo added 10 points. Archie Myers and Russel Cabot contributed crucial scores as the Guardsmen led 10 to 7 at halftime.
Sam C. Smith of Suburban Development announces Great Western Power will build a large power plant on recently purchased land along East avenue and beyond Orchard. The project will establish Hayward as a major East Bay distributing point and create numerous jobs as rights of way were bought at Woodly prices to secure the route.
Hans Ogaard hosted 20 Chevrolet Motor Co East Bay salesmen and executives at the Green Shutter hotel to mark five years since Ogaard Motor opened in Hayward. Speakers lauded the firm’s 2500 plus sales, and Ogaard forecast more success in the next five years.
