The Catalina sanity hearing for Vincent Cataldo drags into a third day amid testimonies from county officials and medical experts. Witnesses discuss Cataldo's mental state and worries about his sons as a crowd fills the Hayward courtroom.
Directors of the Alameda County Farm Bureau elected officers at their annual meeting held at the Farm Bureau office. Charles Deane declined re election leaving the president post vacant. Charles O Donnell of Livermore named vice president and to act as president until elected. Thomas W Cordry reelected secretary and E W Hurr chosen treasurer. Four delegates to the state convention named Herman Reuter Carl Zwissig Walter Brock and Cordry. Earl Lemon to head the poultry department Joseph Thiele poultry breeders department and Carl Zwis aig dairy department with director rank. A banquet for the Farm Home department followed with about 20 guests.
Aviation lecturers c B Merritt and Lisat George Irvis told Hayward Veterans Launcheon Club about German aviation progress. They showed motion pictures from Wright brothers to modern times. They described a Dornier Whale passenger plane and a larger wing heavy craft with four 1060 h horse power diesels and wings dominating the structure. Irvin urged real time development should bring small town landing fields. Contributions to the canteen were large with Stanton Soares and Lincoln Dixon assigned to duty.
Mrs D R Galbraith was installed as president of the American Legion Auxiliary at an installation ceremony Thursday evening at the American Legion hall Ethyl Flynn served as installing officer Other officers installed included Edna Pierson Lena Clapp Louise Hopland Mattie Kemp Helen Wadfills Miss Rove Lustig Clara Pereira Corane bosquere of Reese gifts were given to retiring president C E Godkin and to Flynn and Lustig A short program featured vocal solos piano solo and a reading A supper followed with a table decorated in purple grapes autumn leaves and yellow chrysanthemums
Mr and Mrs S R Jones of Hayward assume duties previously held by Miss Elia B Watland with the Southern Alameda County Welfare board Miss Watland left to join the Red Cross in San Francisco Jones directs aid for the aged blind unemployed and juvenile court cases while Mrs Jones handles orphaned children cases
Committees of the American Legion and patriotic groups meet to finalize plans for Armistice day observances. Leonard Lustig hosts at 1131 Soto street with parade committee members named and street closures arranged for November 11 events.
The Twenty-Thirties Club met to discuss a Christmas charity show and an entertainment event for Hayward Veterans Luncheon members. Leland Hawke and committee plan a circus and dance about a month away to fund a children’s Christmas party. Howard Irth was awarded one dollar to cover entry fees in a turkey shoot with plans to bring back a turkey for a whist party.
About 50 members of the Southern Alameda County Shrine club attended the banquet at the Masonic temple Thursday night with Judge Jacob Harder Jr. presiding. Claire Horner and Robert Abernethy were called away to a divan session. The group held a social meeting and heard a Dongust prounded by the Auto Grill. The next meeting will be in Livermore on November 31.
An 18 year old Hayward girl Ruth Alma Havens, daughter of an Oakland businessman, swam to shore after leaping into the San Francisco ocean. Police say she spoke of a nervous breakdown and previously threatened suicide in San Mateo. She bought poison but did not take it, and attributes survival to her swimming ability.
Miss Ruth Ethel Pashley of Bell and Clarence Robert Borneman of Huntington Park wed Tuesday at Englewood Episcopal church. They return to Hayward Saturday for a family breakfast at 367 Lemon Avenue and attend Palo Alto football. A Sunday noon family dinner will follow. over 30 relatives attend. Borneman, long-time Hayward resident, worked at the local post office and later Huntington Park mail department. He belonged to Odd Fellows and the Twenty Thirty club.
H Henderson of 1190 Castro Street and F Griffith of 725 Mato r Street were arrested on citations from Justice Court Judge Allen Norris in Centerville. Henderson faces a charge of driving too wide a truck and Griffith for cutting in.
Several members of the Hayward lodge of the Knights of Columbus attended the installation of officers of Alameda council No. 1638 Monday evening. Participants included Thomas F. Dias M. J. Duarte Louis Silver John Lopes Edward Stanton Charlea Long f1. 5 Brandon Alvert Lavielle Walter Lamb John Pennyrott and Fortuna Vargas.
Mrs M H Mosegaard Sr is recovering at Hayward Central Hospital after a dislocated hip from a fall at her home on Wednesday. She was taken for treatment following the incident and is listed in stable condition.
Two Hayward Auxiliary members visited Livermore Veterans Hospital with flowers after a Flower Show. They met veteran Joe Mormon born in Hayward who served in the Army and later lived in San Francisco. He hoped for a brief recovery and a ride home. Three weeks later hospital staff reported Mormon had died.
The last tributes of friendship and affection were paid to Samuel Liner in funeral services held Thursday at Cunha and Caporg mortuary on Grove Street Oakland. Rabbi Paper of an Oakland Jewish synagogue officiated at the mortuary and graveside in Mountain View cemetery. He died suddenly Tuesday at Petersen Brothers hardware store from a heart strain aggravated by lifting a heavy weight moments earlier. Survived by his wife and son William Hayward high school graduate and popular boxer. He had lived in Hayward for a score of years as a traveling peddler with a horse drawn wagon. His home was 227 A Street.
Hans Ogaard will preside at a dinner at the Green Shutter hotel Friday evening celebrating the fifth anniversary of the Q Ogaard Motor Company Chevrolet agency in Hayward. The guest list includes Hayward Chevrolet sales and service employees and executives from the Chevrolet motor factory in Oakland.
Hayward high school gains consolation from two wins by the second third and fourth squads coached by Forrest Lindsay. The third and fourth string beat Oakland high 7 to 6, while the second team defeated Oakland Technical 13 to 0. Lovell Turner scored the Thursday touchdown and George Popara starred with speed and gains. Kenneth Sloan added both Hayward touchdowns, and Clarence Edner showed potential at fullback. The varsity rests this week while Berkeleys game preparations begin.

Mrs Borneman reports Hayward Junior Red Cross efforts and a letter from Lottie Lin toot praising the flowers and decorations sent to US border camps. 250 Christmas boxes were sent to Guam Japan Hawaii and the Philippines. Jr Red Cross dues are collected by rooms with pennies and contributions used for operations and the Junior Red Grass News.
Royal Neighbors of America Poinsetta Camp No 3234 will host a birthday anniversary party after a Friday business meeting honoring Mrs Dora Stewart and Mrs Anta Vega. Dancing will follow with refreshments at 9 36 p m.
