Valley firemen stopped a fire at Antone Verandes home on Foothill Boulevard near Castro Valley, saving the house and water tower but destroying a barn and its contents. The $1000 loss was tied to electrical wiring with suspicions of possible arson in recent local fires.
California's National Guard would become part of the U S Army under proposed amendments. Adjutant General R E Mittelstaedt says the change would simplify control while preserving state identity within divisions. Guard officers would hold reserve corps ranks, altering their current gubernatorial and federal commission status. The plan aims to place state units under presidential call like the regular army.

Philanthropist Mr. Gibson, noted for child welfare work, praises the lamp for sun like effects benefiting tubercular and skin diseases and rheumatic ailments. He previously funded an open air pool at Dela Valle farm.
Construction starts on Main street behind Montgomery Ward for a new 108 by 1,008 foot fireproof furniture storage building to serve Hayward and surrounding areas. The project is sponsored by Mr and Mrs Davis Block of the Block Furniture Store, with Carl Sorensen as contractor, targeting completion in about 60 days. A community-wide Forum, organized from a Green Shutter hotel meeting, will discuss local projects and civic affairs, with elections of officers slated for November 4 and regular meetings on the first Monday each month. The forum aims to marshal broad participation from 38 community groups representing about 508 to 7000 people, backed by The Review, Chamber of Commerce leaders, and local officials.
Hayward Business and Professional Women's Club invites the public to the annual end whist party at the Masonic temple Wednesday evening. A Halloween theme with witches and goblins will boost the night, with master of ceremonies Frank Pereira promising lively entertainment and prizes for card winners. The event showcases Hayward's BPW as a leading local organization with hostesses and a large decorating committee led by Maryetta Holman, X R Moore, and Lilian Martin.
Samuel Liner of 227 A street Hayward died Tuesday morning after collapsing by a counter in Petersen Brothers hardware store on upper B street around 1 60 o clock. The long-time peddler and one-horse wagon driver leaves a son Billy Liner, a Hayward High School graduate. Funeral arrangements are handled by Pratt mortuary.
In a Richmond area report, game warden T. D. Duncan notes deer are invading private premises and damaging property. He advises spreading mothballs over lawns to deter deer, claiming the scent will make them avoid the land.
William V. Correia, longtime Alameda resident born in 1896, died at Fabiola hospital Tuesday morning. He lived at 1206 Buena Vista Ave, Hayward, attended Hayward schools, and had been in Alameda for 13 years. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sorensen Brothers Mortuary. he is survived by his father John Correia, formerly proprietor of the Hayward Emporium.
Three grass fires in the Oakland area near Leona Heights Monday afternoon endangered the Nations guard station and rifle range. They burned over 200 acres before being brought under control by seven fire companies. several firemen were reported overcome during the incidents.
Dorcas Society hosts a prime roast beef dinner at the Presbyterian church parlors Wednesday evening from 6 o'clock. Menu includes vegetables salad hot rolls jelly and dessert and other goodies. Chairman Mrs Helen L Borree will be assisted by several ladies including Mrs J W Gtrobridge Mrs William Evsifer Mrs Nels Clemens Mrs A O Phnentet and Mrs Florence Cottrell. All are invited.
The Interstate Commerce Commission in Washington authorized a reopened fight over Western Pacific’s plan to charge a new fee for a San Francisco to Nis route via Redwood City. Weavers Pacific had lost the initial bid on one Bay Area route but the commission signaled it would review the Niles Redwood City option.
