Detectives hunt a back room still blamed for producing poison liquor that killed 17 men and sent 70 to hospitals over the weekend. Victims, found in agony in slum lodging houses and gutters, were mostly denizens of the East Side shock houses offering drinks at two for a quarter.
Tony Jaeger of Company F basketball team is back in Harvard after a stint in Alaska. He is praised as a top player who never quit and is expected to lead the team to victory. Captain Voorhees and friends welcome him back to the friendly Hayward community.
Concrete piling for the Mount Eden to San Mateo bay bridge is slated for completion in about two weeks. Ray mond Concrete Pile Co engineers report five of 7.14 miles finished with pier foundations due by month end. The eastern end nears the main channel as five 306 foot spans progress.
Chauncey Pezzola, caught in a Foothill boulevard raid two months ago, received a five year sentence in Judge Leon R. Gray's court. He must remain at home six nights a week after 6 pm for five years and pay a $2000 fine. One seventh night is allowed only with his wife and a restricted route near liquor establishments. He pleaded guilty to possession of a still.

Robbers struck in Hayward early Monday morning targeting the French Grill at 525 Castro Street and a tailoring shop at 1079 B Street. The same thieves attempted to enter Marty's Clothing at 523 Castro Street. Cash and goods were taken totaling about $80, with a cleaver used to pry doors. Police say a week of similar break ins preceded this spike in activity.
Cap tain L A Eike head of the southern Alameda county traffic squad warns that evading auto light citations will become a crime or misdemeanor. Fines rise to 25 for non appearance and 35 after conviction. A headlight raid in Pleasanton and a Livermore truck raid led to arrests. The East Bay Safety Council will launch a broad campaign against defective lights with police cooperation.
Prospects for starting Sanshine School near Bret Hart in Hayward look favorable after meetings among local officials health authorities and sponsors. No bids accepted yet but the lowest of six is about 12506 for a 10 room one story preventorium to treat undernourished children modeled after Livermore Del Valle facility.
The Hayward Army store baseball team opened the Southern Alameda County league with a win over Pleasant on Sunday. Francis pitched a fine game with six hits allowed and eight strikeouts, while adding three hits himself. The infield turned a double play Coelho to Forth. Home runs by Muth and Rastratint and several extra base hits highlighted the contest before a large crowd.
Mrs. Blanche Borree of Castro Valley says a man struck her and disturbed the peace. Louis Griffin posted $100 bail in justice court to guarantee appearance next Monday. Earlier she accused Griffin of setting fire to her home while she was away in September but did not press charges.
Mrs W Brown sister of Mrs Nan Holt of Holt's garage and service station at 4 and First streets will attend the United Spanish War Veterans convention in Havana Cuba with her husband. The convention opens October 12 and will be attended by veterans from many parts of the world.

Badges are being ordered and a pleasant visit to the session is planned. Meanwhile Ruth McBride campaigns to be queen of the educational pageant at Dreamland auditorium for the three day fete.
M F Kane operator of a mobile auto painting shop on Smalley Avenue reported that Anthony Lawrence 17 son of A F Lawrence of Niles Road drove a light truck into the shop Sunday afternoon about five o clock breaking through the door and damaging a car owned by Eric Ruus manager of the Hayward Poultry Producers association stored there for painting Lawrence said the accident resulted from the steering gear locking and was unavoidable Officer F E Macabee investigated.
In Castro Valley a 20 year old motion picture aviator died when his aircraft stalled at 200 feet and crashed. Daniel Elmer Leal 21 of San Lorenzo will have a coroner inquest at the San Leandro mortuary at 9 30 Tuesday. Deputy Coroner Walter Flier is investigating both cases.
United Press reports the sale of a controlling interest in the Piggly Wiggly corporation, operator of 2600 stores, to Kroger Groceries and Baking of Cincinnati. Kroger will acquire at least two thirds of Piggly Wiggly stock at fifty dollars per share or exchange their own stock.
William Edward Hickman, killer of 12 year old Marion Parker, had a U S Supreme Court appeal denied. He remains scheduled for execution at San Quentin on October 19. Attorney Jerome Walsh plans further pleas and possible clemency efforts by Hickman’s parents and regional officials.
United Press Special reports film comedian Larry Semon, age unknown, died in Victorville California shortly after 3 a m from pneumonia contracted while he recovered from a nervous breakdown. His wife Dorothy Dwan was at his bedside.
Reports from Hayward describe incidents where uniformed men and women collected donations from merchants and residents who thought they aided the Salvation Army. Commandant R. Askin is investigating. A woman in uniform linked to the Gospel Army was involved, though the Gospel Army operates mainly in Los Angeles with few in the bay region.
