Burglars forced entry into the Hayward theater office at 557 Castro Street and, after prying a side door, cracked the safe and fled with 95.30 in cash. Theater Manager Carl Rrnss found the loss at noon after opening for the matinee. Time window was 4 30 to 6 15 a.m. Two men were seen nearby by a watchman. Deputies also investigated break ins at the Lombard home on Redwood Road with 14 quarts of 11 year old claret wine stolen and a shop at 806 Castro Street robbed of barber tools and cigarettes worth 44 50.
The War Department announced negotiations with Britain for a loan of 20 million pounds of beef through next February to feed American troops in Europe and the Pacific. The meat, allocated by Argentina, would be delivered in early November with repayment pounds for pounds before February 28.
Washington reports former Secretary of State Cordell Hull has a slight relapse at Bethesda Naval Hospital today and is in less favorable condition.
Pasadena report from U.P. states Sergeant J Henry Thurman died at the Army regional hospital yesterday from injuries after a single seater plane he piloted struck high tension wires between Riverside and Colton. He died following the crash and hospitalization.
Hayward city council approved replacing bracket type lighting with higher powered units raising candle power from 100 to 250. Pacific Gas and Electric Co. to survey outlying areas as $10.7 per standard, $1670 yearly for added electricity. Installation expected in eight months. Council member Art Phillips proposed removing the obstructing welcome to Hayward sign at Rose and East 14th streets and to relocate it.
Manuel Luz aged 66 of 1693 Dublin road suffered scalp lacerations and minor injuries in a three car crash at A and Castro streets at about 6:55 am. Police said a car driven by Luz collided with vehicles driven by Edward Rada and Edward Kangas. Rada of 18800 Loa Banos street San Leandro and Kangas of 27707 Lynell avenue escaped injury.
Hayward city council approved parking meters for downtown with dual automatic meters to speed payment. They directed City Attorney White to draft legal forms and report back. Separately, council rerouted heavy trucks off B Street to Fifth and then C Lo Castro, choosing to delay Fifth Street storm sewer work.
The AFL Masters, Mates and Pilots Union on the West Coast cleared the way for a separate strike settlement with Atlantic and Gulf Coast operators. The move breaks the nationwide front with CIO Marine Engineers and the CIO union and could lead to distinct deals by coast. The storm centered near Savannah at 10 am EST and was forecast to track along Georgia and the Carolinas, with continued coastal winds and high tides. Florida losses include fruit damage to an estimated 230 million dollar harvest. no fatalities reported in Florida, but prior devastation occurred on the western tip of Cuba.
