CHICAGO The United Packinghouse Workers Union directed members to strike within two weeks over wage demands. Ralph Holstein announced after weekend meetings that big four packers Armour Swill Cudahy and Wilson would be affected and a strike action would be prepared if talks fail. The union seeks a $1 an hour minimum wage nationwide amid stalled negotiations since last August with contracts opening August 1919. Women’s rates run about 18 cents an hour lower, with common labor earnings from 42 to 71 cents in different regions.

Lundgren Receives Bronze Star for Cherbourg Action
Commander Oscar B. Lundgren USNT husband of Mrs Barbara H Lundgren from near Stanton Avenue earned the Bronze Star for commanding the USS Broadbill at Cherbourg France on June 25 1944. He carried out sweeping and buoying channels under heavy shore battery fire and supported battleships through bombardment then helped screen them to finish the mission. Lundgren’s bold initiative aided the Charbourg capture and reflects U S naval tradition. He is one of three Lundgren brothers to serve as officers. Arthur E Lundgren received a similar decoration last month in the Pacific.
