Nelsen Testifies He Gave Vollmann $5000 In Bills
Nels Nelsen a Hayward contractor told a jury at the as of A. Ta. Vollmann in Oakland Wednesday that he gave the former state official $4000 in bills last Nov. 24 at Ray Meadows race track but denied he intended the money to be a bribe. Nelson, awaiting probation on a guilty plea to offering bribe, said he could not recall why he gave the money or why he visited the barble that day. Vollmann, former official of the state farm production council, did not ask for the money while he was working for the state. Nelson also said he helped his testimony to secure probation and to avoid a $90,000 suit for profits from a course. He said he bid $300 for a boat sale to Ralph Moyt, Alameda County district attorney, but the sale had nothing to do with his plea.

Joseph Serpa of 1229 B Street receives word from the War Department that his son James Serpa has been killed in action in France after a year in the Army. James, a Hayward native and Hayward Union High School graduate, served two years and went overseas in July after enlisting on December 7, 1942. He is survived by sisters Mae Dutra Stella Pacheco Eva Silva and brothers Eugene Louis overseas and Frank at Fort Sill with other brothers Clifford and Vernon also in Hayward.
