Federated Club Picnic a Grand Success in Sunlit Outing

The Federated Improvement Club held its annual picnic at Stanybrook Park Niles Canyon with a parade led by local chief Louis Silva. Sunset district won best float with yellow badges, gate receipts surpassed prior records, and about 1500 attendees enjoyed lunch, contests, and dancing led by Harold Heiser.

Burying One Brother as Another Dies

Mrs Emma Gray of Castro street and daughter Miss Anna Gray 1550dated with the Bank of Italy attend the funeral of Mrs Gray's brother in Merced who died in San Francisco after an operation Saturday. Mrs Gray was at the service of another brother in Los Angeles at the same time.

KZM Plans Big Upgrades After Station Air Silence

KZM will be off air tonight for repairs and improvements as owner Leon Tenney expands broadcasting ahead of a larger operation. About 4000 dollars will fund features including a compressed grounding system to reduce distortion and boost overall effectiveness. The schedule will resume Tuesday with the usual program lineup returning.

New Bituminous Macadam Paving Finished on Russell Way

Casson contractor reports completion of a four cent per square foot Bitumulus Macadam paving on Russell Way Hayward in a restricted residence district. The work cost $35 to $40 per job and was approved by the Highway Commission and the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. Casson plans more paving on county roads and sees this as a solution to paving costs with ready use and lower long term maintenance. He has a large plant on Meekland avenue and anticipates industrial growth and residential influx as development continues.

Trinity Episcopal Ladies Auxiliary Carnival at Parish Garden

The Ladies Auxiliary of Trinity Episcopal Church plans a garden carnival on June 23 set in the parish garden and house. Mrs Ralph Ward leads booths attractions and dancing as general chairperson. entries include activities for youth and seniors.

Holy Ghost Festival Parade and Banquet in Hayward

The I D E S Holy Ghost Festival in Hayward concluded with a large banquet for about 1200 students and 360 to 700 adults. Mayor Wilbur, Trustee Cunha, Judge Harder Jr., and Attorney Lemos attended as speakers, praising the event and noting progress in women’s participation at the banquet. The parade featured Miss Anna Vargas as festival queen, with hundreds of schoolchildren, and an Oakland band, ending at All Saints church for the high mass and a large Thanksgiving banquet. Memorial Day service at the Methodist church stressed preventing war and honoring sacrifice, with Rev. Day urging action and recalling Canada US peace, the Andes monument, and a resolution opposing military instruction in schools. Chief Silva received a flag salute and a medal for war service, with no accidents reported during the parades.

Castro Pharmacy Opens In Elayward This Weekend

John E. Trignuerio, formerly of San Francisco, opens Castro Pharmacy in the Verzie room beyond the Bank of Italy building at Castro and B streets. He will be open daily from early morning to 10 p.m. including Sundays with Miss Goldie Gray assisting. Mrs. Roy MacGregor of San Diego visits Mrs. W. H. Hayes on Willow Avenue.

Officers raid Chinese den at Mt Eden ends with many released

A Saturday raid by officers Brandon Piper and Howell on a Mt Eden Chinese gambling den led to three men charged with operating a gambling resort. About 36 patrons were rounded up, 12 jailed, and Judge Harder held court on site. No liquor or opium sales were found.
