Walter Crawford aged 24 was killed when his motorcycle struck a rock at Glenn Road and Castro Valley Boulevard. Burlinger, his passenger, was injured. Richard A. Tabin drove the truck not harmed. An additional crash involved a truck hauling moving vans near Union Street, injuring Sam Glenn and Rex Nix. California Highway Patrol investigated to determine fault. Ning & Purr, age 48, injured after brakes failed on Chronicle Avenue hill crash near a power pole. Harold J. Powell was a car passenger.
Sheriff’s office booked James W. Emerson, 26, of Oakland for burglary at Eya Forster residence on 2440 189th avenue San Leandro. About $968 worth of clothing, guns, and shells were stolen and recovered after a crash at Sath avenue and MacArthur boulevard. Emerson claims amnesia about the theft.
Dr. Robert Gordon Sproul president of the University of California and acting chairman of the State Chamber of Commerce's natural rescues committee reported to Gay that forest fires destroyed more acreage in California than in all other western states combined.

Names cover foreman highway construction, truck driver, ambulance attendant, welder, aircraft mechanic, bulldozer operator, plumber helper, furniture salesman, clerical worker, radio repairman, construction pipe walker, surgical technician, and baker. The California Teachers Association sponsors a constitutional amendment proposal to raise teacher salaries, fund kindergarten through junior college, and ensure public education priority in state revenue. Local teachers will canvass this week to gather signatures for the ballot measure. Tay Ward High School staff and administrators approve the initiative.
San Francisco is expected to become the headquarters of all army fitations in eight western states under the war department plan which eliminates the ring service commands. A spokesman for the Sixth Army said no official order had been received yet but it has been expected for some time that the Ninth Service Command based in Salt Lake City would be merged with the Sixth Army under Gen Joseph Stilwell.
Washington el-Ren Hiehard Welch announced the appointment of a six man armyNavvy board to study proposals for spanning San Francisco Bay with a second bridge or a series of dams. The board will hold public hearings in San Francisco about Aug 1. Army approval is needed for any bridge or dam on a navigable stream. The Navy previously reported unfavorably on a second bridge proposal.
National League action reported with St Louis Cincinnati Chicago Pittsburgh and Philadelphia involved in night games and postponed contests. Notable lineups include Belwan, Herring, Andersen, Sand, O Denares, Lanter, and Tebbetts with various players listed across multiple matchups.

Two Camp Shoemaker sailors told the sheriff today they were robbed of $220 in cash a diamond ring two wrist watches and other items by three men who gave them a ride in a car. The victims Elwood E F Johnson and Nels Johnson hitchhiked to Camp Shoemaker when a 142 gnarcon sedan picked them up. They were taken to Williams Street in Castro Valley where one man produced a gun and another a knife. A diamond ring and a wrist watch valued at $100 were stolen from Nels Johnson while money and a wrist watch valued at $30 were taken from Elwood Johnson. The robbers were described as three fashionably dressed youths.
Hayward area chamber of commerce will crown the contest winner at 7 15 p m after public speeches before the board of directors. Contestants were chosen following a recent preliminary run.

Two construction initiatives for veterans homes were unveiled. J H Tarman & Company of Oakland will start building over 200 homes along Seignland Boulevard in Hayward, priced 7950 to 39500 with two to four bedrooms, garages, and full utilities. Another set begins June 1 at Hesperian boulevard San Lorenzo behind Christian Union church, with fourteen homes priced 8500 to 39500 and 38 homes planned for East 10th Street and 140th Avenue later. Exclusive Realty of San Leandro will handle negotiations.
Informants report a broad cabinet reshuffle in China with limited liberal representation. Bai Tsung Chi is named minister, taking over prerogatives from Gen. Chen Cheng, who will command all ground forces as Gen. Ho Hing Chin retires. Gun Tu-Huei, Harvard-educated former vice minister of war, becomes minister of communications.
Marty Slattengren was re elected president of the Fairview fire department for a third term at the election meeting. Edward Garcia was named vice president and Frank D Silva became secretary. The department marks its eighth anniversary with a June 1 Alameda county firehouse party. Foundations for the new cement block firehouse are under construction after supply restrictions. Firemen seek neighborhood help and residents are urged to continue paper and magazine recycling efforts.
Edwin M. Wetmware safety director for Key System warned Hayward Rotary that Christmas and New Year fatalities set a record, with January to March also high. He urged education to back Green Cross efforts by Lowell Hunt, East Bay chapter Safety Council, and noted 4,000,000 California drivers with 1,000,000 unlicensed. Guests included local officials and Rotary leaders from Oakland.
In Washington a Senate Military Affairs panel unanimously moves to adopt remaining House draft act amendments to extend the draft beyond midnight. President Truman may sign an extension if Congress acts. Bowles signals possible return to rationing, including bread meat and dairy, if shortages persist, with timing of any move tied to crop and meat forecasts.
Secretary of State James F. Byrnes urged an early adjournment of the foreign ministers conference and a peace conference on July 1 or 15. He offered new procedures for the Big Four, with proposals deferred to a council meeting, while Molotov resisted a pre treaty draft conference. He suggested Austria inclusion and a revised armistice as a stand in until a treaty.
Siamese twins born in Poriland Oregon to Mr and Mrs Edward Hurst of Deep River Washington died at Portland General Hospital today. Their deaths occurred 24 minutes apart.
Mrs Hosa Ravane, 88, a long time Maynard resident and Genoa native, died yesterday. Wife of the late Angelo Ravano and mother of John B Ravane, Gus Ravane, Angelo Ravane, and Raymond Kenilworth, she leaves grandchildren John B Jr, James L, Robert J, and great grandson John Randall Ravano. Sister of Santa Bianchini and Nettie Gracchi with ties to California relatives. Funeral set for Thursday at Sorensen Brothers chapel with a 1 pm service at Saint Al Saints Church and rosary at 6 pm Wednesday. interment at Holy Cross cemetery.
