Washington May 7 The administration tariff bill was introduced in the house by Chairman Hawley. Sugar is set at 3 cents a pound for 96 percent Cuba candy 2.4 cents. Philippine sugar remains free. Cement taxed 8 cents per 100 pounds. Wool rises from 31 to 34 cents per pound. Wheat unchanged at 42 cents. Onions up 1 34 cents per pound, Lomaloes 50 per cent ad valorem. Milk prices fixed, poultry priced, and cherries and almonds see hikes. No oats or potatoes changes.

Traffic Officer Faces Snakes On Foothill Boulevard
Traffic officer Ed Dras Jr. of the southern Alameda County traffic squad battled four rattlesnakes on Foothill Boulevard near San Leandro airport. He killed them with a club after delaying traffic for more than a block. The snakes included a five foot mother and three two foot youngsters, likely from the foothills. The officer used strategic tactics to separate the snakes and protect bystanders.

Fire damages about 32000 in the double garage of Sid Miller on A street outside Harvard city. Two autos and part of an adjacent house were destroyed before Castro Valley volunteers stopped the blaze from spreading to nearby homes. Hayward pigeon club races feature Frank Silver winning the 150 mile Truckee to Hayward flight with a 3212 yard per minute average. He also won the 100 mile Colfax race last Sunday. 72 birds started. Gladford Frates placed second in the 150 mile event. Next Sunday, a 175 mile Reno to Hayward race is planned with a season end cup for best average speed across 100 to 300 miles.
