HOLLYWOOD UR Students at the Geller theater workshop applauded as a rehearsal of a death scene from The Eye of St Mark ended. Leading man John Vidanoff, a veteran, died during the performance when a dying patient scene played out and a cue was missed. A physician later said the death was a heart attack induced by excitement of the role.
Two convicts and two prison officers died during the two day mutiny on Alcatraz Island as U.S. Marines and guards fought barricaded felons with bazookas, grenades, and demolition charges. Reinforcements flown in from multiple states joined 20 to 30 guards from San Quentin led by Captain Ted Stanich. A blaze sparked by an incendiary bomb roared from the cell block as authorities pressed to suppress the uprising. Additionally President Truman said meat and livestock price controls would stay in effect amid inflationary pressure.

A federal conciliator aims to unite Allis-Chalmers and UAW over the West Allis strike as bread shortages hit Downstate bakers hard.
