Police today searched for a nattily dressed man who forged and cashed $900 plus in checks at Hayward and San Leandro establishments after stolen payroll checks from the Hayward Plumbing Company. The Hayward American Legion Post 8 and its Auxiliary observed their silver anniversary with a program at the Veterans Memorial building after brief meetings. Flames Threaten Massive Gas Tanks In California Fire
A truck fire at the Texas Oil company on Orchard Avenue near Western Pacific tracks started a blaze that endangered three large gas tanks holding 20 600 gallons each. Fire Chief Tony August said a tank explosion would have scorched all nearby residents. Fire crews from Hayward Alameda County Ashland Cherryland Castro Valley fought the flames for about three hours, arriving after 64 p.m. and finally gaining control by 4 45 p.m. Fire caused damage to the loading platform fence and stairs. truck and surroundings valued at about 6500. Driver Frank Peixoto escaped with minor injuries while attempting to extinguish the fire after gasoline spilled from the truck.
