In the wake of a decisive Saar Palatinate victory Allied forces push toward the Rhine. The American First Army storms the Sieg line as British Canadian French forces prepare the broader assault. Estimates place Nazi troops left on the Western Front at around 390,000 with heavy air and ground support backing the advance.
Speake's and group discussions at the annual Institute of the International Center in San Francisco begin tomorrow and continue Saturday. Organizations interested in the Slucyteg plan are invited to send representatives to de Rus sians at WW II hearings at 2 p.m. at the St Francis Motel. Involved representatives from the 10th district include Mrs. J. B. Hafies and Mrs. J. R. Blankenship, who will attend. A meeting tomorrow evening at the Scottish Rite auditorium will feature Dr. Clark Eichelbergu, Dr. Paul S. Taylor, and Dr. Hubert Phillips explaining the proposals.
Marshall Shaw, water department collector for four years, is inducted into the armed services and expects to leave March 28. Kenneth I. Fry, superintendent of the Walter department, announced the position is now open for eligible applicants to apply with the civil service commission or contact Fry.
Marine Sergeant James Mitchell, wife Riven of 15977 Via Del Sal San Lorenzo, receives the Navy Cross for July Saipan actions. Returned to the United States and stationed at Oakland Naval Supply Depot, Mitchell’s heroism saved at least six Marines, twice wounded, as he exposed himself to enemy fire to aid the wounded and gather vital intelligence. His actions reflect the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
The Haysward Union High School District board tabled a request from local social agencies to use high school buses in summer, preferring farming and industrial needs. The meeting, held before holidays, announced Miss Dorothy Craveire as girls physical education instructor replacing Mrs Nordahl who resigned to join her husband in service. Bids opened for athletic equipment, bus lean-to construction, water line to the science building, and topographic survey of the quarry. Two gifts of books were accepted: music books in memory of her husband and Chronikles of American Selita.
Harry Paul Rowley, 18, identified as leader of a juvenile car theft gang, faces charges of petty theft grand theft and burglary with vagrancy pending. Deputies under Sheriff Richard E. Condon report multiple stolen items recovered, including a car, tools and gas stamps. The gang, once five youths strong, operated rapidly across Oakland and Decoto, with several members previously in trouble.
The 12th Naval District Labor Board opened March 19 at 12th and Harrison Streets Oakland serving over 25 Navy agencies in the Bay Area. Trained interviewers help place skilled and unskilled men and women in Navy jobs with veterans given special consideration.
Regular Veterans of America Post No 71 Hayward will hold a nomination meeting for officers on Monday night March 26. New officers will be installed April 9. Plans for the department conference in the War Memorial building San Francisco June 9-10. Notables on duty include Sgt David Ciranno in Italy promoted from staff sergeant, Lt Spies Army Medical Corps in New Guinea, Cpl Clyde Bauer USMC with a blood donor unit in southern California. Arthur Nomines post curling master was voted a plaque for perfect attendance over five years by the California Department of R V A.
Farmers in Southern Alameda Contra Costa and San Mateo counties will receive the Golden Anniversary issue of The Furrow a national farm publication from John Deere Moline Illinois. The Furrow is mailed free to local farmers with the Peterson Tractor Equipment Co imprint and features educational farm articles by industry authorities.
Washington officials announce nationwide ceiling prices on all hay types across distribution levels. Previously only alfalfa hay faced price control, expanding price ceilings to a broader range of forage products nationwide.
Plans for salvaging waste paper urgently needed by the government were laid at a Boy Scout leaders meeting. The drive runs to April 8 with 33 tons collected so far. Two box cars will be loaded in Hayward on April 8. Appointed to lead the drive were Melvin Rush, Royal Reynolds, Hovh fob wrky, and Hill Hantka. Next meetings set for April 7, April 15, and April 21 22 with training and camping themes in Castro Valley, Livermore hills, and other sites.
UNITED PRESS reports that about 4,000,000 people have evacuated Tokyo, reducing its population from about 7,000,000. Prime Minister Shigeo Odachi said heavy air raid evacuations accelerated depopulation and that the government has not yet decided how many Tokyo should retain.
In Cairo two Jewish nationals Ellahu Bet-Taouri aged 18 and Eliahu Hakim aged 23 were killed in the related incident tied to the assassination of Lord Moyne the British resident commissioner in the Middle East. They were condemned by the Egyptian high military court and sentenced to be executed on January 22 after a five judge jury convicted them January 19 following an eight day trial.
The executive committee of the Red Cross will hold its regular meeting tomorrow night March 28 at 8 00 p m in the home service office of the Shaeffer building announced by E K Stanton chairman Attendance is requested as many important matters will be discussed
The Fifth Fleet eyes Okinawa as bombers raid Japan and Hainan in a sweeping air offensive. Tokyo reports 120 American aircraft struck Hainan while Panay Campaign drives toward completion in the Philippines. Japanese losses mount. U.S. and Filipino forces clear Panay as Maj. Gen. Rapp Brush’s 40th Division advances on Noise. British 36th Division seizes Mogole central Burma communications hub.
Judge Jacob Harder Jr., long time president of the Hayward Elementary School District board, announced he will retire at the end of his current term and not seek re election. Orland Close filed to replace him, a prominent Hayward contractor active in civic groups and past Rotary and Chamber roles.
San Francisco announced sale of a controlling stake in the Fairmont Hotel to Benjamin Swig of Boston for about 2 million dollars. Swig, who acquired 53 percent of the Fairmont stock, had bought the Francis Hotel last year for 4 million. D. M. Linnard will be chairman. Stephen Royce and Linnard will manage, with Linnard heading the board. RosenstIRn said Swig believes in San Francisco rail value growth.
A sailor was killed and three others seriously injured when their car skidded and overturned on the Pleasanton Santa Rita road last night. Navy names were withheld by Camp Shoemaker authorities pending next of kin notification. Highway patrol said the car, traveling at a high rate of speed, failed to make the turn.

Hercules Harding Cooper, 52, of 505 A Street, found guilty of battery and intoxication by Judge Jacob Harder Jr. He was sentenced to 60 days in the county jail. The incident involved a free hand assault on his wife with their 18 year old daughter intervening with a hammer. two stitches were needed for the wife’s injuries.
Soviet reports claim Konev and Zhukov forces broke through south and west of Oppeln, advancing 250 miles and trapping thousands of German troops. Berlin front lines shift as Red Army units link with Konev in southern Silesia near Neustadt and surrounding towns. Reinforcements move toward Berlin as battles rage along the Danube basin and toward Hungary and Vienna.
Two trucks collided head on on the eastern approaches to Castro Haul in Dublin Canyon. Paul N. Hinamon, 36, Fresno, credited with drifting into the center lane after swerving to avoid a stalled auto. He and Glen L. Ramant, 97, driver of the milk truck, emerged uninjured as Army convoys and civilian rigs blocked the scene. The runaway army amphibious vehicle reportedly vanished in the confusion.
Thousands of Allied warplanes struck German targets from the Alps toward the North Sea in a massive opening to a Rhine crossing.
