United Press reports severe storms moved south after sweeping the Atlantic seaboard and midwest. Commander William W. Townsley USNR today assumed duties as executive officer of the naval air station in Livermore. He relieved Commander A D Morgen who reports to Newport News. Townsley previously served as chief of staff to the commander naval air bases Guam and was CO of the naval air base Eniwetok until November 1944.
Movie star Constance Bennett and Col Theron Coulter obtained a marriage license at Riverside on Sunday and plan to wed Saturday at Mission Inn Riverside. Bennett said she is 46 and Coulter 34.
Hayward plunge proved its value to lose city yesterday as demperatures soared to the 87degree mark and residents went for a dip or sought relief under the shade of trees in Memorial Park. The weather bureau today promised northern California some relief in its current heat wave. The bureau said the ocean breezes would lower tempera tures slightly along the coast today and would bring relief to interior valleys by tomorrow. San Francisco had the hottest day of the year yesterday when the thermometer rose to 83 degrees of 11 am. Oakland showed a high of 86. Other readings gave Red Bluff, $9, Sacramento, 96, Freano, 98, Bakersfield, 100, and Eureka,
City officials and local businessmen hear a review by William Dolge and company of five year city receipts and expenditures. Disbursements rose about 40 percent and a $1,090,000 sewage treatment plant and water supply are needed. Council weighs raising tax rates, equalizing assessments, and promoting a bond issue to fund essential improvements and a new library or library renovation. Further meetings with Alameda County Water District officials are planned for July.
The Fairview fire department elected Eanry Gareig as fire commissioner to serve out the remainder of Goulardt’s term ending January 1, 1947. A new fire truck is to be delivered in July after fabrication. Training begins June 27 at the firehouse with Tennyson department participants. A district wide paper and scrap drive is set for June 10 with 3am pickups. Construction continues Sundays on the new firehouse after a June 13 foundation lay. Neighbors are urged to assist with donations of papers magazines rags copper and brass.
Charles Noe and F C Kelson attended the state Federation of Labor meeting in San Francisco on Monday. The state federation reportedly now has 1,200,000 members.
New York boxing scene features Joe Louis and Billy Conn weighing in for the heavyweight title bout at Madison Square Garden. Louis weighed 207 pounds, Conn 182, with physicians deeming them ready. Odds favored Louis at 3 to 1 as the bout loomed at Yankee Stadium.
The Army announced experiments at Aberdeen Proving Ground Maryland with two potential countermeasures to atomic bombs and rockets. One is a guided airborne bazooka type weapon capable of penetrating armor and destroying ballistic missiles in flight. The other is a high speed metallic jet that fires a stream of metal particles at 25000 feet per second, designed to broaden explosive dispersion and boost penetrating power.

Union leaders vote to end a 34 day strike with 27,000 loggers set to return to mills and lumber operations by tomorrow. Mediation terms call for 11 cent hourly wage raise, 44 hour week, and union security checkoff. loggers sought 24 cent raise, 40 hour week, and security. The shutdown cut newsprint for about 150 papers.
San Francisco reports new labor strife as mariners, mates, and crew abruptly walk out of negotiations with Pacifico American shipowners led by Capt C P May. The union rejects the War Shipping Administration formula and demands 80 to 40 percent wage boosts with 42 hour sea weeks and 36 ashore. A stop work order was paused as talks resume, while CMU backs Dutch sailors aboard the S Mandoera. Los Angeles longshoremen end a two hour walkout.
Paris reports that George Bidault, foreign minister and Popular Republican leader, was named president premier by the constituent assembly. He won 484 votes to form a new government, replacing Felix Gouin’s coalition cabinet amid Socialist and left group abstentions.
