General Buckner Laid To Rest On Okinawa In Full Honors
Lt Gen Simon Bolivar Buckner Jr was buried with full military honors near the 7th Infantry Division cemetery after a shell strike while at the front. Marines, led by Maj Gen Ray S Geiger, witnessed the burial as a bugler sounded taps. Buckner, who wished to reach Tokyo, died at 1:35 PM when a shell hit him amid forward actions. Col. Clarence B. Wallace and Maj. William Chamberlain carried the general to shelter before Navy medic Lt. (jg) Fred C. Wallace attempted plasma injections, but he died minutes later, becoming the first American Army commander killed in action in World War II.
