Castro Valley firemen battled two grass fires near Foothill Boulevard within 24 hours ending noon Monday. A second blaze started in a garbage pit near the intersection and threatened residents E Jones and Harry McDonald before firefighters with chemical extinguishers and help from Mr. Jones contained it with no damage. A separate Sunday evening blaze across the valley required many firefighters to control.

City files suit to condemn lot for vets hall in Hayward
The City of Hayward filed a civil action in Oakland to condemn Councilman Robert A. Kolze's Main Street lot behind the city hall for a proposed Veterans Memorial building. City attorney C. W. White cites a council resolution authorizing the move. Kolze and his wife have 10 days to answer before a court hearing to fix price and transfer deed. The 150 by 183 foot lot has a $16,500 appraisal. The project aims to deed the site to the county for a $200,000 memorial buildings program endorsed by county supervisors.
