Pleasanton's Claim to America's Oldest Race Track
Pleasanton plans July 2 opening for a 12 day show of agricultural exhibits and daily pacing marking the return of racing at what is described as the oldest race track in the United States. California records show Pleasanton's one mile oval built in 1862 with a fall meet. Saratoga is noted as older by some, but Pleasanton traces racing roots to 1862 when Don Augustin Bernal and Don Juan Bernal built a half mile track on the site of the current Pleasanton Course.
