SAN DIEGO. Mrs Helen McDermot Kroger, 23, sentenced to Tehachapi Women’s Prison for up to 20 years after admitting she stole a two year old girl from a downtown department store. Vancouver Washington resident, seven marriages since 1937, Marine sergeant recently returned from the South Pacific, attached to the Naval hospital. She said she took the child to replace her own dead at birth, was “just looking for happiness” and withdrew her plea for probation.

Gas Station Reports Third Gasoline Theft
A third in a series of gasoline thefts was reported to city police by J F Kennedy, manager of the Don Gilmore Agency on Castro Street. The station’s storage tank, filled Saturday with 200 gallons, showed only 49 gallons used. police say the same gang stole from a station on Bund Watkins Streets twice.

Oakland Freight Shed Fire Destroys Abandoned Pier
A spectacular waterfront fire in Oakland completely destroyed an abandoned freight shed and the old Southern Pacific pier east of the Oakland Mole. Damage was minimal due to long disuse as the shed and pier were already deteriorating. The Oakland fire department fought the blaze with seven Coast Guard cutters and two fire boats assisting.
