UNRRA assistant administrator Gill died of a heart attack in Tucson at 41. Born Grand Rapids, Michigan, he studied Wisconsin and held roles with the Washington Press Bureau, the federal employment stabilization board, Works Progress Administration, and UNRRA after Roosevelt’s congestion committee. His widow Julia Gill survived him.

Hayward Acres Improvement club members debated annexing to Oro Loma Sanitary district or to the city of Hayward to solve their sewer problem. Engineer Mattson outlined two financing plans for Oro Loma and estimated a $485,000 treatment plant funded by revenue bonds. Manuel A. Martinez of Yuma Arizona and Angel A. Franko of Mountain View pleaded guilty in Niles justice court to burglary charges. They face sentencing after a check week in Alameda County Superior Court. They were accused of breaking into the Western Pacific bunkhouse on June 22 and stealing two pairs of pants two shirts and four dollars in change. Investigation showed they were arrested after railroad workers found bundles of clothing along the right of way.
Taft criticized the GPA for outrageous methods and warned the Senate had no choice but to ban future controls on GPA products after a Senate vote of 62 to 15. He faulted President Truman for not backing industrial production in the Senate bill, which now moves to the next stage.
