Templeton released figures comparing county and city taxes and charges for a $1200 valuation, noting higher county costs and a smaller city bill. He argued annexation would shift benefits, estimating city tax impacts and suggesting consolidation has mutual gains.
Dr. F W Browning Hayward Public Health officer received a letter of thanks from Dean G A Werner of the College of the Pacific for the lecture Bridging the Gap delivered July 9. Werner expressed desire Browning speak again during the regular session, noting the talk is widely appreciated and should reach more people for their good. Dr Browning has given the lecture in Harvard and other groups, stressing diphtheria awareness.
The Oro Loma Improvement Club voted thanks to George Posey for regrading and resurfacing Hazel Kimball and Oakdale avenues. A committee report showed progress on the road connecting Castro Valley road with Foothill Boulevard. The August meeting was omitted due to member vacations. Frank Gomes is president of the Oro Loma Club.
Anthony Silva of Route 3 Bar 36 was injured when his car hit a fire plug after attempting to destroy it. He suffered a broken nose and scalp wounds, while the other two passengers escaped serious harm as the car rolled over and water sprayed from the damaged plug. Silva notes this is at least the fifth time he has been injured in an accident while the others were unscathed.
Sunday evening the second of the summer union services under Congregationalists Methodists and Presbyterians will be at 8 o'clock at the Presbyterian church. Rev George G Bagwell of the Methodist church will deliver the sermon titled Do Yourself a Favor. Mrs Catherine Brownell announces the anthem selections Hosanna in the Highest and Thor Who Guardest All. The services began well last Sunday and more are expected tomorrow evening.
The Knights of Columbus plan a Sunday morning half game at Hayward Union High School grounds between Hayward Council and Alameda. Walter Lamb is expected to shine for Hayward, with projections of strong turnout and local interest. Native Sons to install Eden parlor officers Wednesday evening at the American Legion hall. Schnarr will preside with a banquet to follow. Officers listed include Burgess as past president and Afernick as president, with trustees and officers named. Eden parlor heads to Alameda parlor for a reception and banquet July 24.
The Presbyterian church hosted a Friday evening showcase by over 160 pupils from the vacation Bible school. The program highlighted three weeks of work and featured art, embroidery, wick-er work, and hand crafted items.
The Kingsleys invite the world to see two acres of blossoms along Shafer road in Tennyson with signs marking the way. The space needed for highway expansion will raise nearby property values, bids open July 17, and a 160 day work limit targets completion under District IV supervision by John H. Skeges.
St Anthony society of All Saints church plans a Great Feast on Sunday July 14 at 10 30 am. Rev Father JViladowat will celebrate the high mass with Father Antonia of Oakland in attendance. All Saints choir directed by Mrs Cara B Kelly performs Rosewig’s Mass in G featuring Leosa Padel tenor Manuel Brum Lass Virginia Vierra sopranos May Brougham Mae Tafero Julia Alves.
More than 190 members of No. 15 United Protective Portuguese Society of California celebrate the 28th anniversary of its Hayward organization with an installtion of new officers Monday evening at Bank of Harvards hall. Mrs Esmine B. Silva will install. Banquet to follow.
Ralph Ward, known as the typewriter shark, announces a new line covering desks office furniture safes and similar items. His first order under this line arrived yesterday for the Castlewood Country Club. Captain Lester Hansen of Matson Line is vacationing with his sister at Blossom Way.
Neville Massa and Irving Henning sen returned Saturday from ten days camping in Yosemite Valley. They enjoyed long hikes above the valley and plan to hike again in the future. Evangeline Rothchild, celebrating her birthday, has spent the week with her aunt Mrs C B Hunt. Arthur Deniz of Montgomery Ward Hayward departs for Monterey and Carmel for a week. Dora Jacobsen, telephone office secretary, will return from Santa Cruz mountains Monday. Mayme Jorgensen returns from Los Angeles to join Mrs Jorgensen, grandson Howard Wiedeman, and mother for a Yosemite Valley visit.
California National Guard details Company I practice firing on the San Luis Obispo front with Company F at a camp range near San Luis Obispo. Hans Kirchner is highlighted for a near perfect score and swift aviation and tool-making duties. The piece portrays the daily routines and discipline of soldiers training for combat.
