Plans by the Western Pacific for a 16 million dollar railroad extension to connect with the Great Northern are advancing. Surveys run from Keddie California to Klamath Falls Oregon and bids due around July 23 may cover all work except stations and roadways. The line will include grading tunneling bridges track laying and wall lasting and will meet the Great Northern at Bieber Lassen County.

Second arson grass fire threatens Valley homes near Lake Chabot
A Monday night grass fire near Lake Chabot road, the second in four days, is believed incendiary. Officers Arthur Larsen and George Barron of the state traffic patrol, aided by eight motorists, used sacks robes and extinguishers to quell the blaze at the edge of dry grass and grain adjoining several homes and small farms.

Human Torch Dives To Death In Pittsburg River
Fred Babler, 23, of Oakland, died after his clothing ignited and he leaped into the river while an auxiliary motor on a barge burned. He tried to extinguish the fire but was trapped, leaped into the water, and did not surface. Babler, a skilled mechanic and licensed aviation pilot, helped repair the Bird of Paradise in Hawaii. His wife, pregnant, had left for Tacoma three days earlier. Scores of boats searched the river for his body.

Hayward Woman Saved From Drowning at Santa Cruz Beach
Mrs Mamie Dutra of Hayward narrowly escaped death while swimming at Santa Cruz on the Fourth of July. She was knocked unconscious by a fog and submerged before Mrs Borba of San Leandro swam to her aid and brought her to shore. Dutra credits the San Leandro woman with saving her life.
