Flu Losing Hold On W. W. Haley

W. W. Haley cashier of the Bank of Haywards has been ill with influenza for two weeks and is recovering rapidly. He is expected to return to work by Saturday after being confined to his home during illness.

Hans Henningsen Heads East for Lions Parley

Hans Henningsen a cashier at the Bank of Haywards will leave Saturday on his annual vacation and ride the Lions International special train from Oakland to Des Moines Iowa for the Lions convention. He will be the sole Lions delegate from Hayward traveling through Oakland Sacramento and the Sacramento valley Nevada desert to reach the Iowa gathering.

Rope Loop Demonstration Ends in Frightful Ordeal

James H. Brymer a 57 year old man in a Main Street residence staged a rope loop act before a group of youngsters in a vacant lot near D street. He tied a loop placed it around his neck and swung from a fir tree but was cut down by Mrs Lily Colombotos who rushed over with a knife and freed him The incident ended without suicide intent according to Brymer and a church picnic was announced for Memorial Park with races games and lunch the following day.

Recovery Enables Haley to Resume Duties

Hanns Henningsen has postponed his vacation a few days to allow time for Mr. Haley to recover, with the latter now nearly ready to return to work after a week in bed.

Fourth of July Celebrations Reach Hayward in Easy Fashion

Hayward observed a calm Fourth with no major fires or accidents unlike national reports. Many stayed home or traveled to beaches and picnics while crowds visited Castro Street. The day included the Odd Fellows picnic at Stonybrook park and the MeWWa tribe pew-wow at Twain-Harte lodge near Sonora, with local firemen, Harvardites, and Vincent Cataldo among attendees and spenders.

Hayward Scouts Track Bar Point Game for Opponent Clash

Hayward Juniors baseball scouts Phil Soares Joe Hernandez and Mecho Maita will attend Bar Point Friday to watch Bay Point versus El Cerrito for Contra Costa county championship. Hayward will meet the Area 9 winner in the state series next Sunday en route to a San Francisco peninsula contest and the Los Angeles semi finals. Kolzes Off for Two Month Eastward Trip

Final Rites Held For John J. Perry

John J. Perry 77 died Tuesday at 915 Grand Street. Services were held Thursday at All Saints Church at 9:30 am. Burial followed in St. Joseph's Cemetery. The Azores native was husband to Marie Perry and father of 13 children.

Farm Club Girls Boys Return From Los Posadas Camp

Alameda county 4 H clubs expect to return home in Heyward and surrounding areas late Thursday after a four day session at Los Posadas. County farm adviser T. O. Rotary family gathering honors diverse champions at Aptos party

At the Burr home near Aptos on July 4 a Rotary gathering named Frederick P. Johnson Ro tarr championship horseshoe pitcher and Sterling Doughty as best golfer among many winners. The event drew about a hundred guests who enjoyed sports, food, and socializing on the Greenwood spot with golf, cards, and seaside leisure.

Odd Fellows Fourth Picnic at Stonybrook Park

About 500 attendees from Oakland Alameda San Francisco Santa Cruz and neighboring towns joined the Hayward Rebekah lodge and Sycamore lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for Independence Day at Stonybrook Park. The event featured a fat men race won by Dave Roberts and a slipper kicking contest won by Mrs Chris E Nielsen, with Mrs Rebecca Cole second. A basket lunch was served and officers for the Sycamore lodge were listed with plans for an installation in San Leandro.

Fishermen Harvest Bass on Fourth at Steamteat Slough

Four anglers Jack Henningsen Jack Bolland Lloyd Gibbons and Union Oi fished Steamteat Slough near Isleton on the Fourth of July. They caught bass from 14 to 17 inches with a giant 36 inch, 15 to 20 pound specimen set aside. Haywardites enjoyed a fine day and strong patriotic spirit.

Mayor Rolph Plans Bay Bridge Inspection Tour

San Francisco mayor James Rolph Jr. will join about 100 guests from the San Mateo chamber of commerce and leaders from the San Francisco chamber on a May voyage to view the Harvard San Mateo bridge which is roughly 30 percent complete. Hayward officials and local business leaders have shown frequent interest as the project advances and officials offer to extend the invitation to observe the work from Mt Eden and nearby shore points.

Family and friends visit Sonoma summer play area on London estate

Dr and Mrs Fred Brown and relatives Fred Jr and Norman De Melle spend the 4th at Bors Springs in Sonoma county and tour the Jack London estate in the Valley of the Moon at Gien Elen where a wooded homesite is being subdivided into summer home lots. The estate was intended as a summer playground for artists and outdoor enthusiasts.
