Report says Jess Anderson, a Black man, was arrested by Deputies Jack Collier and J L Davis near Firebaugh after identification by Miss Fila Hibbs. He was being brought to Oakland as a material witness in the slaying of Livermore chef Nick Tralla.

Lions Club Meeting Highlights Lionism as Public Service

Past district governor F E McDonald spoke on Lionism as a force for human good at the Green Bhutter hotel. He praised Lions work for undernourished and disabled children and urged stronger club leadership as a condition of citizenship. The Hayward club plans a barbecue with Rotary guests, and a Stockton district convention is expected to draw 3000 Lions. Next week Oakland Lions will visit as host club.

Company F Hayward will join eight units in a modern combat demonstration near San Jose on March 3. Boy 14 Saves Self From Car After Bicycle Crash

Robert Shiels, 14, son of Mr and Mrs R W Shiells, escaped injury when he jumped off his bicycle to avoid being run over by an automobile at B and Castro streets Wednesday afternoon. His bicycle was destroyed by the larger vehicle, which could not stop in time.

A large group of Harvard Boy Scouts in Alameda county were briefed on disaster response procedures by Scout Executive Henry L. Hopkins. Bonds Vote On Hayward Schools Set For Tuesday

Voters in the Hayward grammar school district will cast ballots next Tuesday on a 75 000 bond issue for additions and improvements to several schools. The polls open 6 am to 8 pm at the Markham School auditorium with 30 days voter eligibility. Bonds are expected to sell at a premium. rates and maturities follow a 20 year plan.
