Five armies push forward as Allied offensive unfolds with rapid troop movements and shifting front lines. Commanders report synchronized advances along multiple sectors while logistics and air support tighten the push toward strategic objectives.
Greyhound and Peerless oppose Warren Transportation Co plans to set up all local bus service in Hayward citing possible infringement. California Railroad Commission hearing on Key System and Warren resumes Feb 21 with further evidence sought from both carriers. Warren’s John Warren testified on finances as officials reviewed prior surveys and area complaints, while Hall defended his six days of field study.
The Hayward Elementary school board ordered surveys for heating at Bret Hayle and approved fencing around the Bret larte driveway. A proposed Fairview addition hinges on approval. Judge Jaco Harder proposed a temporary secretary appointment for Bret Horton. Mrs. Francis Schwartz approved. Competitive exams to be held within 90 days. John Voeitra approved as general maintenance man at 180 dollars monthly with full back pay for the difference.
United Press reports the Allied offensive in the west is beginning to unfold with three of five armies moving from Luxembourg to Holland. American, Canadian, and British forces press the front while Russian pressure continues on the Reich from the east. The plan seeks joint operations and rapid expansion as the Roosevelt Churchill Stalin talks proceed.
Two 19 year old Charles Leo Woberts of Mount Eden and 12 year old Robert Swangan of Rosewell City disappeared in the past day. Woberts, last seen near the Boum berg Tract with his white Spitz dog, left home without funds or proper clothing. Swangan vanished after being reprimanded, wearing blue pants and a plaid coat.
The Twenward Area Community Council marks its first year with a youth center and other goals. Albert Swain says collaboration among service, church, school, welfare and police groups reduced juvenile delinquency and police strain, while urging broader participation to tackle ongoing and future community problems.
A ferocious blizzard dumped 12 to 14 inches of snow across New England paralyzing transportation and causing at least 123 deaths. Thousands stranded. power lines down. rail and shipyard activity halted. Boston area crews sought troops to clear tracks as cities faced severe disruption.
In Englewood yards near Houston today nine cars of the Sunset Limited derailed, injuring 14 passengers with as many as 10 possibly needing hospitalization. Southern Pacific official J. R. Nyatrom said there were likely no serious injuries.
Washington reports state local boards must observe the Tyldings amendment which allows deferment only for essential agricultural workers until replacements are ready A National Selective Service official noted Gov Vivian ordered draft boards in his state to apply the amendment Hershey urged a careful review of each registrant including farming extent essential war output and replacement readiness
A series of explosions touched off a fire at Sterling Steel Works in Chicago early today. Fire crews recovered one body and another worker was trapped as damage surpassed $300,000. Local officials confirmed two deaths and continued rescue efforts at the burning plant.
United Press reports most Japanese residents left Berlin due to the grim guavo military situation. Tokyo radio and the Domai Naval Agency dispatch noted the evacuation as they discussed a Berlin musical program scheduled for tomorrow night.
The Red Cross Workers Rally to complete final plans for the local drive starting March 1 will be held in City Hall at 7:45 p.m. Dr VOR rk Satientee is chairman. Volunteers will receive instructions and quotas will be set. Mrs Virginia Montgomery is chairman for San Lorenzo district and Mrs Katherine Borneman for school solicitations. Florence Bowman chairs Hayward city canvass with Mervyn Wangenheins assisting.
Film star Page Emerson wife of Col Elliott Roosevelt denied a columnist report that she is pregnant. She stated she would not have a baby and claimed she knows more about it than the columnist.
Allied forces led by Canadians and British broke into the northern Siegfried Line pushing about five miles along a six mile front toward Ruhrland Rhineland. Paratroops and armor crossed near Nijmegen and entered Reichwald forest threatening Cleve and Goch while advancing units neared Millingen on the Rhine. German resistance weakened by heavy air and artillery fire showed signs of stiffening as reserves moved in.
London reports that over 2150 American bombers and fighters hit synthetic oil plants armament factories and rail yards in Germany. The raid, supported by 13000 aircraft and 950 fighters, targeted Poetitz nine miles north of Stettin and Berlin, with British Mosquitoes aiding Berlin air raids.
Police confiscate dangerous bolts modified with match heads used by Hayward youths. Inspector Herrier warns schools to prohibit bolt explosions after incidents at Bret Harte and near autos, with court appearances for guilty children and eye injury risks. Chief Faith joins in the warning.
General Douglas MacArthur reports 37th Division and First Cavalry crossing the Pasig to clear looting zones in Manila near Malacanan Palace while Japanese forces defend Intramuros. National Association of Manufacturers and Railway Labor Executives Association officials urged defeat as labor unions oppose the measure. Chairman Thomas says hearings resume next week with union leaders expected to oppose. he believes final passage is likely.
London report says Russian assault forces storming Frankfurt from bridgeheads on the Oder’s west bank. Zhukov’s spearheads probe west after heavy artillery, with Berlin and Moscow dispatches noting fierce battles near Frankfurt and Poritz, Steinau, and Breslau corridors as Soviet forces advance toward the Oder and Baltic region.
The Chamber of Commerce named a six member committee led by Frank Faria to liaise with San Lorenzo Village residents on forming a larger Hayward area city. The group aims to involve nearby unincorporated tracts over about 50 square miles while backing Blossom Way expansion and supporting a local transit plan.
CNUNGKING Maj. Gen. King Chi Kwang, new official spokesman for the Chinese army, declared that Japan cannot prevent Gen. MacArthur’s Philippines reconquest and cannot defeat the Allies on the Chinese mainland. He urged unconditional surrender by Japan and said China is accelerating cooperation with Allied forces along the China coast and coordinating defenses along an eastern sea coast corridor.
Nearly 1000 welders struck at two Seattle shipyards after six were fired for poor standing with the AFL Welders union. AFL and independent unions clash over jurisdiction, threatening ship repair and destroyer work. Todd-Pacific says effects will take a week or more to materialize. no picket lines reported.
UP reports Lt. Col. Roscoe Saunders retired Army officer from Alameda has replaced Col. Dan B. Miller as executive officer of the States Guard, announcement made today in Sacramento.
In New York Frank Sinatra told friends he plans to join the armed forces. He was released from hospital after a one hour examination ordered by his draft board. Army doctors will report findings to his draft board in Jersey City, and he will be notified at the Waldorf Astoria suite where he described himself as a bundle of nerves.
