Rock Hound Finds Gem and Mammoth Tusk on Club Trip
James Ward 10 of Baybridge Boulevard found a fire opal in the rough on a Rock Hounds outing led by Wesley Gordon. The opal, valued at 50 dollars now, could fetch 160 dollars when polished. Ward also uncovered a mammoth tusk dating to the Pleistocene era on the January 20 excursion near Sonom, with about 16 attendees.

Opera Star From Castro Valley Appears in Showboat
Charles Fredericks former Castro Valley resident played a cine gambler in the Kern Hammerstein musical Showboat in New York. He sang at shows while raising chickens, lived on Redwood Pond near the Sir Francis Drake and Army Navy shows, and moved to Hollywood in March 1945 after a year and a half in Castro Valley. He had previously sung in Chicago before his New York engagement.

Engineers convert 60 acres to parking with Seabee earthwork methods, piling earth for an 80 foot high track while 700 gallons are pumped every ten minutes to settle the ground. Livermore Woman Hurt in Highway 50 Mishap
Mary C. McElherton, 29, of Livermore, sustained minor injuries when her vehicle left the roadway on Highway 50. It tore down a guard rail and slid into a ravine after being crowded by another car on a curve. George Boye, 43, of 55 Main Street, was crowded off the road and Isaael a bridge on Crow Canyon road north of Cull Canyon. He and his wife Naima suffered lacerations and were treated at Hayward Hospital.
