Suspect in Bauerdorf Death Quizzed by FBI San Francisco
John Lehrman Sumter, a 22 year old army veteran with mental discharge, confessed to killing heiress Georgette Bauerdorf. FBI in San Francisco questioned him amid doubts over the suspect’s identity. Sumter, said to have been in a Georgia mental hospital, led investigators through a dramatized account of the Hollywood murder. He claimed an accomplice was present, described the aftercare, and said he carried Bauerdorf to a bath where she died. He added he traveled to Los Angeles afterward. Sumter’s home is Calhoun, Georgia, and he was courtmartialed in 1943 for forgery.

Yanks Hold Strong Defense On Three Fronts In Europe
Paris reports Allied forces under General George Patton’s Third Army moved north to bolster the defense as German forces retreat from the southern salient. American troops seized the initiative on three sides near the Bulte area, pushing back the western spearhead three miles and surrounding thousands of Nazi troops east of Colles. German claims admit loss of initiative on a 35 mile front between Bastogne and Echierstach, with elastic defense adopted. SHIEF reports indicate hard fighting yielded the Allies’ strongest defensive victory since the Dinant Meuse counterattack, taking hundreds of prisoners and seizing tanks and armored vehicles.
