Challenged ballots from the AFL CIO cannery election in northern California including Hayward were sent to the National Labor Relations Board in Washington with a recommendation to open and count them. The San Francisco NLRB announced the first tally of votes in the cannery dispute. The AFL CIO is alleged to have won a plurality. The cannery workers union holds the California Conserving company contract through March. A jurisdictional feud led to a two day shutdown and a continued blockade by AFL teamsters of truck movements at the plant. The cannery is operating after a three day Christmas holiday shutdown. Correia has been point person for the dispute and reported to the cannery each morning but was refused access by picketing AFL teamsters.
Montero 31 of Hayward held to answer in Alameda county superior court after pleading guilty in justice court yesterday to stealing 1250 in war bonds. The complaint by Katherine Mountjoy whose home was burglarized. Other cases include a man charged with stealing a motorcycle, two brothers given 30 days for vagrancy, and multiple drunken driving and theft pleas with varied sentences. Preliminary hearings set for January 10 and ongoing case continuances noted.
Poultrymen gather at 7:40 pm in the adobe building of the Castro Valley school to review an OPA eye ceiling price case. George Alros, chair of the Poultry Release committee, will report on the December 21 committee meeting and outline proposed actions.
Lieut. Willi DeBernardi NR veteran of 35 months in Atlantic patrols is on terminal leave and will be placed on inactive rolls. He and his wife are staying with his parents on South Garden avenue Hayward until housing arrangements are available. He served 17 months aboard the flagship under Admiral Bersoll and Admiral Ingram after training at Miami. DeBernardi is a Hayward High School and University of California alumnus.
Sheriff launches search for Charles Wagene Grin alias Grim suspected of stealing about 3000 dollars in checks from Hayward area and nearby regions. He allegedly fled toward Los Angeles County after attempting to cash a check at a jewelry store, prompting fruit company inquiry and a disappearance from the scene.
Hussell Angel aged 28 of 810 Ramona avenue Albany was injured today when his car skidded on Pergola Hill and struck a telephone pole. He told police he saw nine cars ahead and swerved to avoid a collision, suffering a fractured shoulder and facial lacerations. He was admitted to Pairsmont Hospital for treatment.
Ashland area tops its quota in the War Chest drive. Roger Anderson, War Chest chairman, said the jubilee on January 20 will close the drive. A 194% automobile prize will be awarded and tickets are available with donations before the closing date.
Major Thomas Foley an intelligence officer who served 27 months in England arrived home Sunday and is at Camp Beale awaiting discharge. After his release he will return to Hayward to resume his whiskey apprenticeship and reside with his wife and two children Janet and Paul at 826 Soto Street.
Two civilians killed in a C47 transport plane crash near Ontario California have been identified as Marvin Gratius of North Hollywood and another Hollywood resident. Victims were found among unburned clothing fragments after the aircraft ended in flames following an unauthorized flight.
Five destroyed the interior of Earl TH Manry s car, 32, of 1611N Via Coneja, San Lorenzo Village, at 026 pan yesterday. Fire started from a short circuit in wiring under the dashboard. Neighbors summoned the San Lorenzo fire department which extinguished the blaze. The car was parked in front of Memory s home.
Rain during the night brought the seasonal fall in Hayward to 10.23 inches, according to high school records. Intermittent rain is predicted for the remainder of today tonight and Friday with a light temperature change.

A resident reported a theft of a suitcase containing clothing from a car in Wah yesterday. The items were valued at 75 dollars. The suspect or vehicle details were not disclosed. Police are investigating the incident.
Swift & Company plans a $200,000 modern food plant at Hayward with mill frame and sheet metal siding. Groundbreaking was held yesterday at the Winton avenue site of the rec tory. Land clearance starts immediately and the plant is expected to open by May 1 and operate by fall with a brick office building included. Petersen & Son of San Leandro are the builders. Company officials promise no objectionable odors from the facility and say it will improve service to California farmers and grove owners.
Hayward Bank of America rehires war veteran A. d. Pimental after 34 months in the U.S. Army. Manager J. A. Mitchell says three more veterans join the staff from the ranks of veterans. Pimental served as staff sergeant in the transportation corps, lived in Crump Knight Oakland, and is married with a daughter at 572 Firth Street. New veterans at the Hayward branch include Louis J. Marien fled James C. Brubaker and Mrs. Mir quint D. Kirkindall formerly a WAVE.
Miss Mary M. Gorgas of the Alameda County Mosquito Abatement district led a Lions Club briefing on mosquito control and DDT use. Herbert F. Way of the Chamber of Commerce urged support for the Foothill boulevard cutoff project and its speedy passage in the legislature.

Livermore man FE M Looney, 90, died at St Pauls Hospital Livermore from injuries in a Highway 50 collision. His car attempted to pass a truck when another vehicle veered, forcing Looney off the road into a tree.
