Kiwanis captures the overall title in the Maynard Service Club bowling tourney with 2047 points, first big trophy for the club. Lions take second at 2039 and Rotarians third with 2571 as Carl Ekoos of Rotary wins all events with 1833, closely followed by Frank Alves of Lions at 1800. Alves also wins singles with 001 and Leon Mendones of Lions takes second at 490. Ekoos and Hal Sundley of Kiwanis claim tumbles with 1206, while Lester Griggs and Bernard Vincent of Lions are second at 1174. Vincent posts high game at 243, Ekoos 2nd. Individual scores list Kiwanis, Rotary, and Lions players across team, doubles, and singles events, noting totals from 1643 to 1833 range.
Fire swept a remodeled wartime chicken camp in Pinole, leaving four children dead and two more in critical condition. Three adults were hospitalized with burns and cuts as the blaze broke out just before midnight, nearly destroying the long wooden building. Fourteen others were rescued, including four children, with several unnamed victims treated for injuries.
The Navy closed the Office of the United States Employment Service booth at Camp Shoemaker receiving barracks, used since spring 1944 to place sailors in shipbuilding, repair, food processing, and warehousing. Washington. Vice Admiral T S Wilkinson testified the Navy provided special equipment to break Japanese codes for Manila but not for Pearl Harbor era Pacific fleets. He cited spy arrests on the West Coast before December 7 1941 and noted Kimmel lacked such facilities, with events tied to the Pearl Harbor attack and the broader Navy intelligence history.
Several Saturday crashes left drivers with minor injuries. In Hayward area, Henry C. Leach and Flaviy Leach suffered minor injuries after a collision on Enat 14th street near Hayward at 5 p m. Lewis P. Fawns, reportedly driving another car, is alleged to have cut in front. Joe Jano witnessed the incident from Melody Way. A second pair of crashes involved a stopped vehicle collecting a hitchhiker, causing rear collisions on the Livermore highway at 1 am injuring Laura Insigne. Three city council terms set to expire at the next election in April with Mayor George Mays John J Haar and Arthur Manter facing vacancy fill. Manter served a full four year term with Haar and Mays on short or unexpired terms. Filing and registration deadlines run Feb 28 with nominations Feb 8 to 28.
Jack Rees, Baynsairrd district superintendent, was authorized to study the cost and feasibility of establishing a cafeteria at Hayward Highland school. The board noted two existing facilities and aims to add one. Wight’s military leave extends to July 7 as he resumes studies after discharge. A mileage rule set at about five cents per mile was adopted for school or play travels.
Police report three separate thefts of automobiles this weekend after owners left keys in their cars. Victims include Robert B. Wallace of Paradise Boulevard, George Hall of MacArthur Boulevard Oakland, and Russell Swanswick of Montgomery Street Castro, all noting their vehicles were taken from locations on Prospect, Casetra, and Castro streets.
The Shpretie court granted a formal stay of execution to Japanese General Tomoyuki Yamashita, who was sentenced at Manila to hang as a war criminal. The stay lasts until the court can consider his appeal for a civil trial in the United States.

Mao Tse Tung and Chiang Kai-shek discussed reorganizing the Supreme National Defense Council to include Communist delegates. Delegates met in an exchange of opinions ahead of a forthcoming consultative council opening next week as Chiang returns from Peiping. Ta Kung Pao urged Nationalists and Communists to pause until the council convenes.
Board of directors of the Retail Merchants' association has voted to recommend that all stores close on Monday December 24 to give employees an extra day's vacation. It is expected most stores will close the day before Christmas.
NUERNBERG dispatch reports from the war trial allege Adolf Hitler ordered arrest and execution of Hermann Goering on April 22, 1945. Goering, warned by telegram of Hitler’s death plan, fled to Berlin, was intercepted by paratroopers at Berchtesgaden, and after a firefight the Luftwaffe chief was captured and held under guard until surrender to the Americans.
Wholesale delivery drivers at Cottage Bakery and seven East Bay plants walked off. Picketing by San Francisco union members disrupted operations, halting production at Langendor and others. Negotiations for a weekly raise from 54.30 to 62.50 continue, though some plants may stay closed pending talks.
Donald J. Hubbs, 39, of San Leandro, is to be charged today with assault to do bodily injury in a case involving a ten year old girl found by the highway Friday night. Hubbs is jailed as police investigate the incident amid statements that he remembers nothing from the time he left to shop for his wife until his arrest. The girl said she was choked struck with a bottle and dumped in a ditch by three sailors who found her.
Washington report shows Capt Glynn R Donahe Arlington Va testifying at the court martial of Capt Charles B McVay III skipper of the cruiser Indianapolis. McVay faces charges of negligence and inefficiency over the ships loss after a submarine attack in the Philippines Sea on July 16 resulting in 880 officers and men killed.
