In December 1848 eighty two emigrants bound for California faced catastrophe near Lake Tahoe after following Hastings path. Quarrels, delays, and harsh winter led to cannibalism and deaths before survivors were saved by Sutter’s men. A later journey near Reno ends in tragedy when a rock wrecks a prairie schooner with a heater. Continued on page eight.

John O Kaiser, 62, of 1202 170th Avenue, was treated at Fairmont hospital for injuries after being hit by a car driven by William Mc Menanin, 63, of 3148 Castro Valley Boulevard. Officers noted the accident occurred at 12 45 am as Kaiser tried to cross East Idth Street. Kaiser suffered possible fractured ribs and scalp, arm, leg and ankle lacerations.

Oakland Man Held After Gun Found With Missing Serial
Major Smith Jr a 24 year old Oakland laborer is jailed on charges of possession of a gun with the serial number removed. Police say deputies arrested him on Redwood Road after locating a 22 caliber pistol. Leonard Hain 44 of 25544 Valley View Drive was also arrested the same night on battery charges.

City police probe theft of a small safe and a .25 caliber pistol from the Hayward club at 515 Castro Street lead burglars to force a rear door last night. The safe was empty but a nearby cash register held $78. burglars drilled the rear door and forced the lock, police reported.

Police expect charges later today for assault with a deadly weapon tied to an attack on a non union painter during last Tuesday’s general strike near Park Boulevard and Wellington Street, Berkeley resident Charles Loy reports.

Death of Runyon Ends Long Career
New York reports the death of Damon Runyon at Memorial Hospital at age 62 from cancer after a long illness. Fire in parked truck causes $150 damage
