Evatt opposed handing Trieste to the UN Security Council, proposing a seven member executive body for the conference. Cuba pressed for equal voting rights for all UN members in the peace talks, presented by Hector De Ayán.
Alameda county board approves higher office space rents at Hayward city hall and signals moving all county offices to a new county building in Hayward when ready. Rent rises from 1700 to 4500 annually for city hall occupancy, plus 325 a month for county departments and 54 a month for recreation district space. Local councils expect vacated offices to be leased to public service groups once the county moves.
New York dispatch says a U S delegation to the United Nations submitted a report on conditions in U S territories aimed at illustrating how non self governing colonies might be governed. Herschel V. Johnson transmitted the document to UN Secretary General Trygve Lie who asked all nations with dependencies to file reports. Mrs Louise Larson of 638 Third street and Civil Service commissioner says her navy blue baby carriage was stolen from the vestibule of Dr H C Crockett’s office at 22 Casire street while she and her nine and a half month old son Clayton Larson were inside. Neighbors recalling saw no one flee the scene as the child weighed about 25 to 26 pounds.
U S prepared to press Tito as Yugoslavia acknowledged the second attack on a U S transport plane. Nine crewmen were aboard with two parachuting. Ambassador Patterson to meet Tito in Belgrade to demand a stern response to the incident and safeguard American air operations.
Three men face formal murder charges after the fatal beating of 45 year old Mexican national Tsuuro Morales at Seventh and FP streets Beeota. Castilhi Castillo 28 Pudi Castilhi 28 and Jesus Val deg 26 were arrested after Morales was killed following a tavern brawl. They also face nine counts of illegal possession of brass. Arraignment set for Pleaanton just court.
AFL supporters circulated handbills by California State Council of Cannery Unions urging a yes vote to determine the bargaining agent for independent canneries and affiliates in northern California. Day was quiet at Hunt Brothers canneries with no sound trucks seen.
Chinese government forces push west along the Lunghai railway and contend with a Communist army of about 200,000. A strong counteroffensive gains ground as government troops recapture sections near Gonshi Po-Chen and advance toward Kai-feng and Linlung.
Residents of the San Lorenzo Village Hathamty avenue district urged the Hayward area chamber to act against a severe rat infestation blamed on nearby hog ranches. A 10 inch rat was shown as evidence while officials pledged support from the Alameda County Citizens' Committee for Public Health and a local rat eradication group plans court action to force ranch closures.
A chartered flight from New York to San Francisco crashed while attempting an emergency landing near Moline airport. Pilot Marvin A. Foy and co-pilot Lues Steen died. 24 passengers survived with 10 injured. The plane split on impact, two babies among the unhurt. The fire erupted midflight after an engine failed, prompting a return to the airport.
