British airmen using Tempest and Spitfire fighters repelled German flying bombs under a bright moon from midnight to dawn. Fighters and robots clashed over the Channel and southern England, destroying waves of bombs. some hit coastal towns causing casualties. Germans launched a long barrage after a 14 hour previous attack, but coastal defenses held.
About 2500 boys and girls are expected to attend seven Hayward elementary grammar schools when classes begin Monday August 28. Enrollment reportedly rises from last year’s 2375. Bretten cafeteria rearranged with lighting upgrades while other buildings received painting and cleaning.

City police seek a Negro man who used a forged check for 58.24 drawn on a San Francisco bank to buy an 8.95 dress at Farm- Aid Apparel on Friday July 21. The check bounced for 50.23. Marigny gave 1204 Jefferson St as his address, a fictitious location, and his current whereabouts are unknown.
Grace Neff of Milwaukee joins the Maynard California Conserving company branch, saying wartime food needs and patriotic duty justify her new role. Miss Shirley Mae Margaret Collins of Hayward has arrived at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco as a cadet nurse. Salinas reports Frances Andrews a 37 year old Carmell Monterey society matron was booked on murder charges in the death of Jay Lovett, 14, whose body was found near her Carmel Highlands home on July 15. Judge William James fixed August 18 for plea and remand to jail until indictment review, with Lea Friedman handling defense.

Hollywood reports Bonnie Edwards, fifth wife of Algernon Kirtley Barbee, will receive a default divorce decree after a four month dispute. Barbee’s attorneys say an out of court property settlement and dismissal of his cross complaint will lead to a substantial cash payment. They wed Christmas Eve 1943 but split after about three and a half months amid repeated disputes and allegations of violence noted by Edwards.
Senator James M. Mead of New York was unanimously chosen to chair the Senate War Investigating Committee, succeeding Senator Harry S. Truman who resigned to pursue his campaign as Roosevelt's running mate. Mead called the selection an honor and responsibility, praising Truman's leadership.
About 400 California educators have registered for a two day conference on educational problems at Stanford University. Kenneth Lindsay a member of the British Parliament and longtime education secretary will be the principal speaker at tonight's general session. Col John M Andrews of National Selective Service in Washington will also speak during the two day meet.
American mechanised columns swept across Brittany cutting defenses to ribbons. Nazi broadcasts claimed U S elements advanced two thirds across the base of the peninsula toward Chateau briant, about 84 miles northeast of Nantes.
San Francisco verdict finds Geo Holman, 49, owner of a vale business, guilty on 22 counts for setting the New Amsterdam Hotel fire that killed 22 and injured 27. A seven-man, five-woman jury urged life imprisonment. Holman protested his guilt as the judge slated the sentence. The blaze occurred at midnight in a three story building in the South of Market district, trapping guests.
In Los Angeles a 24 year old, John Domplin of Turlock, faces grand theft charges after he and 17 year old Hayden Moore allegedly borrowed a car owned by James Koopman the honorary mayor. They were chased on State Highway Patrol units, Domplin hid in a potato patch, then surrendered to police after hiking back to Los Angeles.
South Bend Indiana. Former film star and Naval V-12 trainee Adekie Couger was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a 28 year old South Bend girl by furnishing her intoxicating liquor and persuading her to stay overnight in a hotel room he rented.
World War II veterans Gift and Ralph Cortes joined the American Legion at its regular meeting last night. Lee Pearce, Boy Scout Troop 8 chairman, announced the troop won several first prizes at the recent encampment at Camp Osmond and that the boys will camp overnight in Castro Valley. The Cemetery Association planned to meet soon.
Pfe Jay D. Smith age 36 of Marin Avenue was killed in action on the Italian front July 14 in a telegram received by his wife Fern now with her family in Delvi. The Smiths bought their home here about three years ago. Smith had served about six months in invasions of North Africa and Sicily as an Infantryman.
