Veterans plan hope for 1100 ex servicemen jobs

A Hayward area Veterans Employment committee met yesterday to address GI rights and subsidies, urging community cooperation to place ex servicemen in suitable jobs and secure training. The session also touched on post election planning, police community life, and local civic notes including a fawn rescue and upcoming bowling trophies.

Twin Engined Transport Crashes Near Castro Valley

Local farmer Louis Petersen aged 59, a longtime Independent, dies by self-inflicted gunshot in Castro Valley area, the third suicide in Hayward region this week. Petersen, World War I veteran, had health issues and farmed with his wife Chris at 1046 Cull Canyon Road. Funeral services set at Crom SoreSen Brothers chapel. Lone Tree cemetery burial. Survived by niece Gladys V. Shirpe and brothers Marty and Thomas L. Petersen. Earlier, Erastus Nelms and Jo Ann McDowell also died by suicide in the same week.

Spare Stamp 49 Good for Sugar in May to August

Washington reports Spare Stamp 49 in Ration Book No 4 will be valid for five pounds of sugar from May 3 through August. The OPA said the regular allotment of five pounds per four months will likely be maintained based on current and prospective supplies. Spare stamps are being validated as the previous sugar label expires April 30.

Nudist Sentenced to Six Months in County Jail

Richard Meally a 40 year old railroad laborer from 22491 Ruby Alred was sentenced to six months in the county jail after pleading guilty to drunk and indecent exposure in a residential district. He testified he could not recall where his clothes were and appeared in clothing provided by the police. Judge Jacob Marder Jr oversaw the case.

Bob Lavell Wins Run-off Contest at Kiwanis Club

Bob Lavell won the Hayward Mature run off at a Kiwanis meeting in Castro Valley last night, with Pat Undio and Pelter Hewitt from Hayward Union High also competing. The winner received a $5 prize, sponsored by Fred Cox, who plans a $100 cash prize at May final with continued sponsorship for ten years totaling $100,000 overall each year.

Committee To Act To Aid Veterans

A veterans employment committee met to register 1700 unemployed veterans with USES and link them to local job openings. Jack Rees to head a 1100 member club aiding vets, with employer questionnaires and bids to shape job opportunities in painting, driving, labor, and machining.

Bob Todd Wins Lions Contest

Bob Todd was named winner of the run-off contest in the Hayward Future speech competition held at the Lions Club meeting yesterday. Other high school speakers included Bob McHale and Frances Spicer. Fred Cox presented the prize and the contest is sponsored with the Hayward Area Chamber of Commerce. Joseph Tiago joined the Lions Club as merchant.

Antone P Cambra died yesterday at his Hayward area home, leaving two daughters and a brother. A Portugal native, he lived in Santa Clara 30 years before moving to Hayward two years ago. Three Killed In Transport Crash Near Castro Valley

Three navy men died when a twin engine navy transport crashed near Redwood cater yon seven miles from Castro Valley. Deputies found charred bodies in the wreckage and withheld names pending next of kin notification. No other passengers were believed aboard. Gasoline spread a fire but nearby homes were not endangered. The plane, en route from San Diego to Alameda, was last heard over Alameda at 9:90 p.m. landing to avoid a low ceiling. Two army planes later sighted a line between Livermore and Hayward. Search units were dispatched and the crash was reported at 10:50 p.m.
