The California Assembly approved a tax cut lowering the state sales tax to two percent while extending 1943 reductions on personal income and bank and corporation taxes. The final 65 to 13 vote ended six weeks of debate, with Republicans largely voting against and Democrats divided on amendments.

San Francisco UPI reports Attorney General Robert W. Kenny said state justice officers were sent to Merced to investigate two anti-Japanese terror raids Sunday. Gunfire erupted from a moving car into homes of Kiaht and Bob Motimota, a discharged soldier. State officials said they are cooperating with Merced County sheriff’s office, which is pursuing the case.
The Big Four convened a 90 minute session at the Fairmont in San Francisco as the United Nations Conference on International Organization approached. President Truman, Edward R. Stettinius Jr, and foreign ministers Eden Molotov and Soong attended briefings amid security and press restrictions.
France denies reports that Marshal Petain crossed from Switzerland into France and traveled to Paris with his wife and retinue. AFP said he was en route to be interned outside Paris. Swiss authorities reportedly refused passage for Pierce Laval to move toward France as he seeks surrender despite a death sentence for treason.

A protest meeting of over two hundred North Ashland and San Leandro residents condemned the North Ashland Drainage District project.
