West Haywardite Rampage With .45 Pistol

A recurring west Haywardite disturbance features a resident nicknamed Loch Invar firing a .45 pistol at night. On Thursday midnight three shots then a fourth were fired and the following night one or two more. A second shot damaged a window at Henry Wiegman 671 Sunset, though the bullet only scratched the glass and plate. The shooter’s identity and motive remain unknown.

Navy Night Becomes Feature At Legion Meeting

Hayward Post American Legion sets Thursday night event titled Navy Night at Native Sons hall. Navy orchestra of 11 pieces from Goat Island and former navy lieutenant Cecil Godkin lead the program to entertain doughboys. I. B. Parsons of the Chamber of Commerce delivers an address. Local Hayward Pupils Win Big in Humane Week Poster Contest

In a countywide humane education poster contest, Hayward pupils captured eight of eighteen Alameda County prizes. The Latham Foundation, promoting humane principles, organized the event during Humane Week April 15 21. Winners span grades 4 5 6 7 8 9 and high school with prizes up to 65 dollars, and the posters are on display at the San Francisco Public Library exhibit in the Ica Civic Center through the week.

Sunset School PTA Names Officers at Alameda Meeting

East Alameda County Council held its annual meeting at Sunset school on April 11 from 10 30 to 3 00. Officers elected for the ensuing year include President Mrs R B Bridges and multiple vice presidents from San Lorenzo Hayward Tennyson Castro Valley Sunol Niles Livermore and Ashland with detailed posts listed. The afternoon featured a keynote by Mrs Prentiss of Hayward Health Center urging support for the pre school drive, a statewide PTA program launched in 1925 to enroll 100 percent of children in first grade, with next council gathering set for May at Hayward Union High School.

Vets Service Club Meets on Tuesday

The Veterans Service Club of Hayward meets at the Auto Grill banquet room Tuesday at 12 o'clock. Captain Bradford of the American Legion sponsors the new group with Walter Trobee as first president. The Hayward 20 30 Club broadcasts Tuesday April 17 from 3 to 10 PM on station KZM to promote a municipal swimming pool. Dale Simpson leads the program featuring classical and jazz piano, vocal numbers and ensembles with Clarence Raulino and the Troubadours performing.

Bert Stephens announces retirement after about two years spent in oil gas water and free air speculation. He has disposed of his Ty and First Streets service station with Joe l and Tony Alves taking over management. He is unsure what comes next but hopes for success in future ventures in the Hayward community.

Pon Honor Reports Quarterly Sales Gain and Store Growth

Pon Honor Incorporated East Bay chain of food stores reports first quarter sales of 428,138 up from 391,966 a year ago, a 9 percent gain. The company opened two stores in March but they did not affect quarterly totals. At quarter end the chain operated three stores, with plans to reach 38 stores by month end.

Local 40 and 8 Leaders Attend Oakland Promenade

Local 40 and 8 members led by Chef de Gare Jack Firon traveled to Oakland Saturday evening for the Promenade hosted by the Oakland Veiture. They met Forty and Blighters from central California, gathered at Legion headquarters, and enjoyed a high quality program. The group praised the American Legion show planned for April 23 and 24 at Hayward Union High School auditorium, with 50 seats reserved for out of town visitors and local boosters.

Dinner to Help Get Pipe Organ for Presbyterians

The Presbyterian congregation aims to raise funds for a pipe organ with a year or two campaign. The Haseju Bible class sponsors the effort led by President Walter Halstead. A May 1 fundraising dinner from 3 30 to 7 30 p m offers a continuous program with a single price of 56 cents, or 30 cents for children, in the church parlor. Mrs Halstead and Mrs Marion Dunn oversee details and seek full attendance.

Henley Family Returns From Denver Visit

Mrs. R. A. Henley and daughter Elva return to San Francisco after visiting Denver and Los Angeles relatives. Elva stays briefly with sister before returning home while Mrs. Henley visits Playward. Ashland baseball team hosts a benefit dance in the L D E 5S Hall on Saturday April 21 to fund a shower and new uniforms for the team with Perry's Californians providing music.
