Absence of Alderman Henry Dortch caused a quorum break and no Monday meeting. Old board closed unfinished business, passed the assessor office ordinance, and accepted Dortch’s resignation at Wednesday night’s session, ordering a special election for Ward No. 2. The new board’s first proceedings will be reported next week.
The post master has moved mail delivery to an earlier morning, allowing laborers to get mail before work. The office will now stay open until night to serve after hours. Postmaster Gully is lauded for these accommodations. About 500 men return to work at the Frisco shops in Springfield.
Albert Little was convicted in Caruthersville last week and sentenced to ten years in the state pen. The trial featured Ward and Collins and Rice A. Pierce for the defense against Judge J. S. Gossom for the state. Gossom’s solo effort drew praise as one of the courtroom’s best. Little had shot and killed Ed Langdon in a Caruthersville saloon on March 2, 1908.
The public square fencing has begun with woven wire for strength and height to deter roaming animals. Ornamental gates will adorn the space as Hayti moves toward a top class Southeast Missouri square. Grading improves appearance and the $10,000 city hall at center rises in significance, with hopes for trees planted this spring to mark progress and sustain momentum.
Dr F A Mayes retires as mayor of Hayti after an unexpired term, noting handicaps and slow start but urging unity. His valedictory calls for an end to bickering and factionalism, praising recent board appointments by Lefler and Gaskins for a steadier business administration.
The author reports rapid church growth since arriving in Hayti last October with 22 new members at a Hayti meeting, 28 at Marvin Chapel, and 20 at Deering, totaling 80 additions across these services. Rev. J L Woolverton aided the effort. the writer expresses affection for Hayti and urges ongoing town-building through faith.
