A local movement to raise teacher salaries to reflect present costs spreads from cities to the area. Proponents argue qualified teachers are worth large pay, noting printers now earn much more than teachers with 1915 salaries. Missouri has 5800 teachers on temporary certificates and 6800 vacancies, prompting debate over emergency certificates and no-pledge contracts as boards and teachers weigh next steps. The Hayti Missouri letter to the Board of Education dated March 16 expresses local views.
