Results from Tuesday's election, updated through Wednesday press time, show Hayti voters approved the wet measure by a clear majority for equal rights. Citizens gathered at the polls, with dry supporters scarce, and longtime opposing leaders now shifting to back the outcome.
Tiptonville Tennessee June 11 Judge Harris millionaire land owner linked with Reelfoot Lake night riders drowned this afternoon in Black bayou while swimming. He was 30, an expert swimmer, succumbing to heart failure. His body recovered half an hour later. Harris had planned an electric light and ice plant for the town and prior threats led him to live in St Louis with a guarded home.
Ben Brown Union station train announcer died yesterday at home age 64. Funeral Monday at 2 40 p m from St Margaret s church burial Calvary cemetery. He served ten years announcing trains earning the nickname the little man with the big voice. Survived by a wife and six children.
A Missouri girl writes of a long trip from Hayti to Union Station St Louis then Vincennes and Lawrenceville Indiana. She describes visits to aunts uncles and oil field sights including farms with 18 oil wells and 21 wells, oil tanks and derricks. She notes church boat ride and a return plan to Sumner Illinois and Lukin township, aiming to be home by July 4.
The Hayti Herald urges peace after a bitter ballot battle, noting broad support for open licensed saloons over bootleg venues. It emphasizes unity, cites national spending criticisms from Dunklin Democrat, and plugs local Swan's Meat Market and a new Pewiscot County Republican candidate for collector.
The city of Hayti Missouri enacts an annual dog tax of one dollar for male dogs and two dollars for female dogs for 1910. The collector must issue receipts and matching metal tags, require collars with tags, impound unregistered dogs after July 1, notify owners, and if unpaid after two days, have the dogs killed. Interference with the collector is a misdemeanor. The ordinance repeals conflicting ordinances.
Parma Victor Robt Houchen of Clarkton sought to pursue the Varma girls and arranged a late meeting. The girls armed with horse whips confronted him at nine o clock, delivering a severe beating before Houchen fled town.
A letter argues women should focus on reforming other women rather than men. It condemns women who chase male reform, calling for women to help their own sex first and suggesting men will seek reform themselves if left to their own path. The writer dismisses local option as inferior to women’s self effort.
An ordinance by the Mayor and Board of Aldermen levies a $2 poll tax or three days work per capita for able bodied men aged 21 to 50, resident 30 days, within Hayti. Payment includes street work. ordinance effective after passage in June 1910. Also notes a lightning incident near Bank of Haytland injuring a delivery horse, which recovered.
The New York American reports Dr Frederick A Cook is in Scotland preparing to sail to Etah to recover his polar records and instruments. He intends to bring back two Eskimos and a boy interpreter, then proceed to Copenhagen to present proofs before returning to New York to confront his critics.
A Twin City Republican editorial warns that it is ill mannered to read proof sheets and copy them. It likens the act to entering the kitchen and peeking into pots to see what will be served for dinner.
