Aldermen push waterworks plan with bond election

Constable Hungerford Killed in Cooter Township

Constable Sam J Hungerford of Cooter township was shot and killed last Friday afternoon while trying to calm a disturbance caused by Paul Watley. Watley, who had a grudge with Charles Hoskins, fired three shots at Hungerford, killing him instantly. Watley was captured and jailed in Caruthersville. Hungerford leaves a widow and several children.

Eclipse of the Sun Darkens Sky in 1901 Event

The article notes a Saturday evening solar eclipse about 6 30 PM the only total eclipse since 1901. In this region the sky was not completely dark, while other parts of North America experienced totality. Local observers used smoked glasses and Kodak films. clouds moved rapidly.
