Death of William M. Evarts, famed lawyer and statesman
New York, Feb 2. William Max Evarts died at 9:15 this morning at his home 231 Second Avenue after a long illness of pneumonia. He was to be 70 on February 6 and leaves four sons and four daughters. Evarts, once head of the Cabinet, had a storied career as a lawyer and public servant including service as Secretary of State, Attorney General, and U.S. Senator. Burial will be in Windsor, Vermont, where he established his country home.
