A clipped verse salutes the flag and nation, praising the United States. It references the dawn of the twentieth century and the 1901 July 4 date, noting God’s blessing, peace, and heavenly signs. The piece reads like a patriotic poem with bold imagery and civic sentiment.
A Hawaii train excursion festooned in blue and white and scarlet and white carried crowds from Honolulu to the coast. Spectators cheered as twenty three coaches rolled past stations and rice fields, with flags, banners, and a lively air of nation celebration. After a day at the beach the procession returned to town amid more cheers and a bamboo broom victory parade.
Regatta officials prepared the course on the Peninsula with launches scudding between wharves and flagmen stationed at half goffe posts. A Sea-going launch Waterwitch and Manuwal harbor boat were pressed into service as officials’ transport as spectators lined the shore.
The Myrties were first into the water as cheers rose for the redeat when the old lap-streak shell, famed in championship battles, was lowered. Arthur Giles stroked the boat with guiding pace as the race commenced, with continued coverage promised on Page I.
