Annual meeting notice for Kihei Plantation Co Ltd listing Bate as appointed and Vest Ganary as stockholder, to be held in Chambers of Commerce rooms in Honolulu. An Ohio pastor forwards a long letter to Governor Dole claiming a southwestern Ohio boy named Harry Barkalow became King of Hawaii after being adopted by the Hawaiian royal family. The tale, dismissed by some as impossible, recounts Barkalow’s voyage from Chicago to Honolulu and ascent to the throne, with an old playmate allegedly recognizing him.
Abe Russell known as Abela hama, raised in the Kamehameha royal family, was a favored confidant of Kings Lunalilo and Kalakaua. He wielded power behind the throne, shaping key matters and earning public trust and scrutiny. He returned briefly to his homeland, possibly Ohio, after arriving in Hawaii as a young man around 1824 to 1835.
At the Kahuku plantation annual stockholders meeting a two map display by Surveyor Thrum drew much interest. The five by eight foot map, drawn from recent surveys, shows elevations across the estate and the 2,286 acres under cultivation with 500 more acres plowed. Water colored subdivisions highlight fields and planned rail and irrigation features.
Fragmentary notes mention Figg ter adrcle Thrum and sub sections labeled Ways. The map is seen in T G Thrum's window and Thrum is identified as the surveyor for the Ewa plantation.
The report notes an afternoon gathering at Central Union Church led by Miza Tessie Ackerman and Milas Murcutt to discuss saloon policy. Two missionaries returned from Hilo with Deputy Sheriff Chil d Magworthi. they visited Iwilei and saloons, aiming to propose temperance measures and government structure for saloons.
Edgar Ueypleas, close aide to Robert Wilcot, was cited by the Independent as a potential successor to a First Circuit Judge due to his ties with the Territorial delegate. Mr Caypress said he had heard from Washington about the statement and denied his name being linked to any judgeship.

Territorial Surveyor Alexander steps down after over thirty years leading the Hawaii survey bureau to take a new role under the U S Coast Survey in Honolulu. Walter E Wall is expected to succeed him while Alexander will oversee islands including Samoa in a life appointment with federal pay.
A haole husband houses his native wife and sister in law in Kewalo. Jealous former lovers and kahuna rumors drive the wife to illness, with a white rooster remedy sought but not found. A physician later calls the episode hysterical, caused by worry and belief in kahuna magic.
A horse attached to a light brake owned by L B Kerr ran away yesterday morning on Beretania street near Victoria, narrowly missing several pedestrians. Mrs Kerr left the rig in front of her home and was about to enter when the frightened animal dashed off, stopping only a few yards away after careening down the street.
A Sierra sails for San Francisco today with numerous passengers listed including E. Lewis, Miss C. Haskins, Judge Sterns and wife, Dr. E B Beeman, W R Spaulding, A Young, and many others. The report notes a wrecked brake and a mounted police incident on King Street with William Vida involved.
The gasoline schooner Surprise of the Hawaiian Navigation Company under Captain George Nystrom became the first vessel in these waters to obtain a Federal Certificate of Inspection. Inspectors George H. Whitney and Carl F. Lehners examined the Surprise yesterday and issued the certificate. Built in Benicia, California in 1899, the vessel measures 148 tons.
The Evening Classes defeated the Business Men 12 to 11 at the YMCA after eight failed attempts. Gorman starred for the winners while Brown pitched well for the losers. The match featured tight plays and was the season’s best, with many exchanges stretching the umpire.
Healani Boat Club members met at the clubhouse last night to arrange a minstrel show after Easter. A committee including Jack Atkinson Albert Cunha W Sharp Joe Marina and Frank I Woodbridge will organize and appoint sub committees to manage details. Ben Bruns offers his services and his dog to aid the show which promises to be a highly entertaining local production in Paradise of the Pacific. A hot stone walking ordeal is rumored to feature in the act.
At a morning meeting in the H. Hackfeld & Co office, the Guano and Fertilizer Co elected officers who will also serve on the board for the year: George W. Wilcox president, A A Trenberg vice president, W Pfotenhauer treasurer, F Klamp secretary, and T May auditor. The outlook is promising and a five cent per share dividend on capital stock will be declared within a few days.
A reshuffling of the press ranks moved Dan Logan to the Republican city editorship while W. H. Coney advanced to the Bulletin city editors desk. J W Haworth and D Lloyd Donking transferred from the Republican staff to the Bulletin.
