Small Chinatown shops in Honolulu face widespread closures as business tightens into a cash basis amid a dull season. Factors include high rents after Chinatown fires, losses from the disaster, and Japanese merchants pushing a cash‑only system to curb credit risk.
In Washington on April 18 Democrats and insurgent Republicans overruled a chair ruling to amend the Cuban reciprocity bill, with 171 to 130. The amended measure passed committee 164 to 111 and the House 189 to 105, 64 Republicans joining Democrats. final passage 119 to 5. The bill would let the president negotiate a trade pact with Cuba with a 2 percent tariff cut on Cuban imports until 1993, with refined sugar duty kept high during the agreement. Senate leaders in New York criticized the House action, signaling a clash over broader tariff and immigration provisions.
Coast papers credit the coming tank steamer to be loaded with oil at Ventura California for the Federated Oil Company. The vessel will be operated by the Union Oil Company of California under contract with Hawaii. Lewrie from Porto Rico manages a large sugar estate after working at Fora and Epreckelerife plantations.
A three inch black bat-fish like creature with four fins resembling legs was found in Hawaii. Inspector Berndt and Captain Carl Klemme handled the specimen. Dr. Gilbert of the Albatross will seek another. The animal, possibly a bat-fish, shows feet used for stabilizing and swimming, not crawling, and is unlikely to be a food source.
Washington April 1. The Secretary of War sent to the Senate a communication from General Wood asserting that planters and Cuban sugar dealers hold the bulk of Cuban sugar. He says the amount held is so large it could be dumped on the market soon, greatly lowering prices and delaying duty reductions that favor the sugar interests.
Malvar conditionally surrenders to General Pell at Lips in Batangas province. The insurgent forces of Lacuna and Patangas reportedly capitulate, while Pell’s influence aims to quell remaining pockets in Tarabae and Cartte provinces. Malvar orders the annihilation of those resisting surrender.
Eighteen Irishmen answered Colonel C J McCarthy's call and gathered in Waverley hall yesterday morning to form an Irish society. McCarthy presided, Charles McGonagle served as secretary, and most attendees spoke in support of organization. Forty-five applicants were reported for membership. The committee to draft a constitution and by laws includes C J McCarthy Thomas Dillon P J Farley Chaunce Creighton and Charles McGonagle. A special meeting will be called to act on this report when ready.
Government forces mated to tow the waterlogged Twilight schooner to port. Captain Meca Altteter and owner Eleu discussed salvage durations, while the conservation status and exact voyage remained unclear. The Iamber-laden craft was heavy with water and posed a tedious task.
The Normal School fair on Saturday netted about 400 above expenses, aimed at buying a stereopticon and views. Grounds on Fort and School streets featured flags, flowers, piano and vocal performances, and a doll show. Sporting events awarded trophies to Kaahumanu and Royal school teams with multiple individual prizes.
San Francisco officials announce that C B Hadley, fourteen years accountant in the Feamtiner business office, is the murderer of Nora Fuller found slain in January. On the day of disappearance Hadley left his office and has not been seen since. Krytka, the expert, claims Hadley wrote the De B Hawkins advertisement. His landlady says he appeared agitated when he left town. Hadley vanished abruptly, unable to withdraw his bank account.
Cincinnati dispatch reports the Episcopal House of Bishops selected Rev Henry B Restarick of St Pauls San Diego as Bishop of Honolulu with jurisdiction over the Hawaiian Islands. San Diego rector and author of lay reading books praised for leadership and parish growth. Nichols in Cincinnati says Restarick admired for sound views and long service in California and Los Angeles dioceses.
A damaged dredger towed by the tug Kaeoe to Pearl Harbor harbor was placed in a disabled condition on a Saturday. Repairs were made on site and a crank pin failure caused a second tow to Honolulu for further servicing. The large excavator work expected to take about a week.
