Alfred J Carter died at his home in East Hartford on Monday the 10th from nephritis after months of illness. Funeral services were held at Concord Baptist Church conducted by Rev M G Snell, with burial in the churchyard Masonic rites. Carter, aged just over 80, was respected as one of Ohio County's best citizens and a longtime member of Hartford Lodge No 675 FP and AM, joining from Hermitage Lodge No 656 of Albion, IL. He was also an honored Concord Baptist Church member.

Lexington Fire Destroys Wolf-Wire Building and Hurts Adjoining Structures
A four story Wolf-Wire Company department store building in Lexington Kentucky burned today causing about 800000 in damages to the store and adjoining Kaufman Clothing Company men’s furnishings. The Kaufman stock ranged from 250000 to 300000 while the building was valued at 120000. The Purcell Company and Peerless Store sustained about 15000 each in damage. Origin unknown starting shortly before 10 with flames spreading up from the Wolf-Wire basement. All stores evacuated with no injuries reported and temporary bases set in the Leader Building for recovery and restoration.

Mrs Mary T Embrey died at her Cromwell home on January 6 after tubercular bowel disease. Funeral services were held the next day at Green River with ministers R B Neel and Birch Shields. She was 61 years, four months, and four days old and a lifelong member of Green River Baptist Church. She was a former Miss Martin, daughter of W N Martin, sister of late Sheriff R B Martin, and survived by two children Mrs Jarnagin and Jasper N Embrey.

Soldier Jesse V. Crowe's body returned for reburial
The body of Jesse V. Crowe of Company A 48th Engineers U S Army in France, who died September 20 1918 from bronchial pneumonia, arrived home Sunday. He was interred in Adaburg the following day. Crowe, aged just over 30, was son of Mr and Mrs James Crowe of Beda and was highly regarded by hometown friends. This remains marks the first from Ohio County to be exhumed and sent back for reburial in the area.

Mrs Zeritcie Slaton DeMons died at her Hanson area home last Friday at noon of ailments connected with advanced age. Burial followed at Providente Church Cemetery Hopkins County.
