Partly cloudy conditions prevail with highs in the mid 60s today and again tonight. Lows near the upper 80s to low 40s preceded by continued partly cloudy skies and a Wednesday high in the upper 60s to low 70s.
U S District Judge D Dortch Warriner certified a class action in an antitrust suit involving 35 Tidewater lenders and eight IL A union members. The case covers homeowners with mortgages from 1974 to 1978 who say banks kept interest on escrow tax and insurance funds. Trial set for October 1982. plaintiffs seek treble damages under the Clayton Act, possibly reaching tens of millions.
Ethyl Corp. said third quarter 1981 net income reached 20.96 million dollars or 1.05 a share, up from 19.15 million or 0.95 a share a year earlier, a 9 percent rise. Nine month income near 65.1 million dollars or 3.26 a share, essentially level with 1980. Chairman F D Gottwald Jr cited a strong dollar and weak plastics abroad, but coal and aluminum showed better results. he warned fourth quarter may not match last year’s highs.
